My Fault Insurance Increase - fredthefifth

Ok, my fault but I picked up an SP50 in a 50mph section of the M4 (mobile camera van) and my insurance premium with Direct Line has gone up from £570 to just over £800.

I currently drive a 58 plate SAAB 9-5 HOT Aero (260bhp) but am thinking of changing to something like a diesel Mondeo, Insignia, Passat etc.

So in insurance terms I'm thinking of looking around. I'm mid fifties, had an SP30 eight years ago and that's it.

Any suggestions regaing insurance companies? Any point?

Cheers.

FTF

Thats a big increase in your premium,Direct Robbers is a better name for this company.

There must be better deals for you shop around I used to be with the coop.Give them a ring.

A few years back a friend was fined and 3 points for speeding - DL upped the premium £50 / yr - moved insurer and they ignored the offence.

He did the comparison check with/without the 3 points and the premium did not change.

So a worthwhile look at other companies.

Every insurer wants a rounded book and will take a different view as to risk - sometimes within the year. I have people on cover in prestige cars with one major company for less than £200. I have seen the same company quote more than doublt the price of another - into several thousands - if they don't want that particular risk profile.

HJ obviously propmotes some of the comparison sites who pay for ads.

I generally use a broker who will make sure that there are no nasty surprises if you have a collision and will also quote the firms who are famously "not on price comparison sites" as well as those that are. They are called Motorquote on 0844 346 0428. The NFU are also good - and you don't have to be a farmer.

Hi All, thanks for the replies.

A quick check has found that even with the SP50 on the SAAB I can get low £400's so there is hope. A couple seem too cheap if that makes sense! Anyone got experience of 'LV=' or 'Swiss Cover' ??

Also is there likely to be a problem with moving insurer and then changing car shortly afterwards?

Thanks again. FTF

I don't know about the "shortly afterwards" bit, but I was surprised to get stung for changing my car just over a year ago.

It was around £25 for what they called an "Admin charge". Can't remember which company it was, but I'd been with them for a few years.

Was the big rise at renewal time or just after reporting the SP50 ??? I think a lot of folk are getting large increases at renewal time this year. My SP60 made no difference at all to 1 car and two bike policies.

re admin charges - blame the comparison web sites and searching for the cheapest quote - they will pare things to the bone to get to the top of the lists and make everything else chargeable extras.

My Fault Insurance Increase - fredthefifth

My increase was soley due to the SP50. Renewall was December and rates had been fixed, then the SP50 and the increase I describe.

I dont follow how they can justify the increase for you having a speeding fine.

I would move on and stick two fingers up to this outfit.

Had Good experience of "swift cover2 who certainly were not swift at settling a no fault claim and getting my excess refunded.Use the comparison websites and be absolutley truthful. I was surprised when i added My wife to my policy for my previous car when she had just passed her test , just the admin fee to pay, (LV) my current insurer now she has slightly more than 1 year at renewal charges £6 extra to add her. £239 me only fully comp chevrolet epica 2.0td and £245 with She who must be obeyed added. Chevrolet motor insurance is underwritten by provident in halifax, thoroughly nice peeople to deal with and a standard uk number if you check online. the daily mail money page has a link that also gives you £20 cashback and this makes it competitive, just add the bits you want and get LucyBC's tip for separate legal aid insurance. if you have a comlicated driving history a broker is good, but for most people one of the comparison websites will come up with the goods, but if you are buying a new car ask for a quote from the dealer, that's how i got my last quote, with my free driveaway motor cover! HAPPY MOTORING!

Average increase in renewal premiums was 30% in the last 12 months. Insurance companies will find any reason to increase the premium, so shop around.

Sorry being thick here but just want to be sure - is that get the legal insurance that is offered with some policies, or get seperate legal insurance?

My Fault Insurance Increase - Dutchie
When I used to be with Eagle star and the Coop legal cover was included in the fully comp.policy.
My Fault Insurance Increase - fredthefifth

Some of my quotes have it as an option for an extra 40 to 50 pounds a year.

My Fault Insurance Increase - Dutchie
I wouldn't pay more than £40 pound extra its a matter of ringing round. I have never used a broker.I hope you find the right policy and pay less than what you are paying now.

The Autolaw policy costs £14.99 and covers all your family's vehicles plus you and your family as drivers or passengers in other vehicles including buses and taxis, on bicycles or as a pedestrian in the street.
My Fault Insurance Increase - fredthefifth

£14.99, is that a month or year ?

My Fault Insurance Increase - LucyBC
A year. I think they are putting it up to £20 though.
My Fault Insurance Increase - oldroverboy
