News reports vary on this one big time from the cows in a field to on the road , to him sounding a siren / or just flashing the lights!

I do sympathise with the Farmers family over the sad death but what message does it give to emergency drivers on call , don't use lights or horns ! Now supposing he was on his way to a fire and was delayed by a herd of cows and a family perished in the fire due to the fire engine not responding in time, I wonder what would of been sugested then ? ( may be he should of tried to disperse the cows to make progress )

reports are at the moment that the Fire service are not commenting on the case or making any recomendations, so it still sounds like its down to the individual to make a decision as to whether its right or wrong and if a death results the driver may be prosectuted. Hmm

Firemen are trained NOT to cause animals to panic. Rule number one is not to cause harm trying to prevent harm.

Trying to disperse a herd of cows forcibly with a fire engine can be seen as reckless especially if there are humans around.

I agree with that, as we were trained even on the buses with horses on the road and the air tanks blowing off! always advised to reduce air pressure or shut the engine off ! but then we were not on an emergency run.

Original reports were that the fire engine was on the road & cows in the field! as with all new reports there is big variation. As they say you can't believe what you read

Absolutely - we can only hope the court got the correct story and came to the right conclusion - this appears to be a recurring theme whenever a "the Law is an a$$" story is reported.

Well on the local news tonight its caused quite. Some concern and a retired police officer is quoted as saying it has far reaching implications for all emergency drivers ! This may in turn increase response time by driving slower and reducing horn usaage !

But what is the point going to a emergency if in the process somebody gets killed?Children leaving school and a emercency vehicle driving past at speed. This got to be a decision. by the driver.

In a town nearby 4yrs or so ago, a deaf chap was driving through a junction on green.

He was T-boned by a Fire engine going through red at possibly 35mph with it's siren going and was killed.

The fire engine driver was found guilty by the court.

We've all probably seen police cars racing through city streets and thought "what is some doddery old fool steps into the road" etc.

Blue lights are not synonymous with either invulnerability or immunity from prosecution.

I think this is a very rare case. Sad for all and i hope the shout was not a hoax as many turn out to be.Professional drivers always know that it is always their neck on the block if anything goes wrong. My best mate is a paramedic, and extremely skilled driver. He regularly says that the biggest problem he has is drivers not paying attention to whats going on around them. Many a time he is stuck behind some dozy driver who despite blaring blues and two's going right behind them, they are oblivious to whats happening.(probably to busy listening to their stereo. Admittedly the 300BHP 155 MPH Volvo T6 ambulance car he drives will be up your chuff in an instant, but if it was my toddler who had drowned in a paddling pool or my child walking home from school squashed on the pavement, blood leaking out of every orafice having been reversed over by a neighbours builders van(two of many actual shouts he attended last year) then I wouldn't want him to hang about. its a risk, but one IMHO worth paying.

Originally charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

From the sheriff's comments he was lucky to keep his freedom, let alone his licence.
