I bought my car off a man who let it sit on his drive for about a year unused, we put some charge in the battery from another battery pack and I drove it home with no problems. The car drove prefectly. The next day we put a new battery in the car, I dove it down to the petrol station to fill it up and again the car drove perfectly. The next day when it came to starting the car up as soon as I started it the engine cut out straight away, the thing is there does not seem to be any problems with it under the bonet, I cant seem to figure out what the problem is.

worth a quick visit to a VW specialist, or good indy, ask to have the throttle body washed out and a throttle body re-match or recal done, takes few mins and will transform it.

Simple little process , it may have fault codes stored that need to be cleared , if they keep returning it may need a throttle body but to be honest 99% of the time just a re-cal and clean does the job.

same problem polo 1.3 cl 1995-when i had car from new within 1 year tried to start car but imediatly would cut out quite often.......after long battle with vw and dealer even with new keys cut and reprogrammed.VW EVENTUALLY ADMITTED IT WAS IMMOBOLISER (AFTER SOME ANGRY EXCHANGES) AND THEY KNEW ABOUT THE PROBLEM -APPARENTLY THE ZINC PLATED TERMINALLS FROM THE UNIT CAUSED FAILURE (caused communication problem from immoboliser to ECU hence the automatic cut-out by immoboliser)-replaced under warranty new unit with gold plated terninals.(i was told it would have cost me £200 lucky warranty was still in force)

almost 16years old no problems from immboliser.

immoboliser problem(replaced under warraty):- article written about my other vw polo 1.3cl 1995 engine ADX.

if anyone having problems when car comes to stop,going around roundabouts,slowing down to stop AND CAR CUTS OUT FOLLOWING POSSIBLE SOLUTION;-(VACUUM PIPI FROM THROTTLE HOUSING TO BRAKE SERVO UNIT)

Reg S:-1998 1.0L engine AEX cutting out at idle when coming to stop...........had same problem i found solution replace the thick vacuum pipe from throttle housing to servo.

before replacing that pipe testing is easy to see if that is the problem:-disconnect the very thin vaccum pipe coming from air filter housing linked by nipple to the thick vacuum pipe from throttle to brake servo vacuum unit,then drive with that disconnected (thin vacuum pipe you will notice revs or the rpm will be contantly high while the vacuum pipe is disconnected) if the car engine does not cut out when driving then coming to stop engine idle,then its the pipe. i discovered that by accident after weeks of replacing this and that real pain.good luck( luckly got my relacement pipe from scrap yard)
