LDV Minibus - vegetable oil - richardbettabus

Is there anything to be recommended in using used veg oil in a diesel engine? Some say it works just like diesel but I'm not keen to experiment then have to replace my minibus!

Even if it does work, what about emissions? Do they stay safe and within legal limits or will the smell of fried fish get VOSA to list you as an environmental hazard?!

Thanks

Diesel fuel is heavy oil which does not vapourise easily at low temperatures. Vegetable oil as bought straight from the supermarket can be used as a fuel for compression ignition engines but it is a bit too thick and gloopy to be used in a vehicle diesel engine. It needs to be thinned down, and the easiest way to do this is by mixing it with regular diesel, something like 70/30 diesel/veg oil. Failure to do this will result in difficulty in cold starting. Some people say that the lubrication qualities are superior to regular diesel, especially modern low sulphur fuel, and so claim it's better for the pump, injectors and emmisions. Diesel we buy at the pump is filtered to about 25 microns, and so if you're thinking of using old and used vegetable oil make sure you filter it very well.

Also remember that you are not paying fuel duty on vegetable oil used as road fuel, but to declare the duty to HM Customs and Excise then makes it perfectly legal to use.

Thank you. That is most informative.

If I were to risk messing up my engine but it does all work out ok, how would I go about complying with your advice to declare the fuel to HMRC and would I then be liable for payment and at what cost?

I notice the price of new veg oil in the supermarkets seems to rise* with the price of diesel, so unless you are collecting old stuff and cleaning it up there doesn't seem to be any £££ gain?

*Whilst it makes frying a few chips more expensive I approve of supermarkets selling at a similar price to diesel inasmuch as the car park is not littered with discarded veg oil bottles.
