...when you get a puncture that can't be repaired and nobody has the tyre in stock.

I have the winters on steels so am currently running a summer tyre on the LF and a winter on the RF. Very far from ideal and quite sketchy to drive.

I think I may have two choices,

1. get the same tyre (Nokian WR G2) with a different load rating (94H instead of 91H)

2. get a different tyre (say a Conti winterContact or Dunlop wintersport)

Having spent the day driving with two radically different tread patterns I am not keen on having two different tyre designs, so how much difference does it make using a 94H instead of a 91H? So far as I can tell this is fine in the eyes of an MOT tester as it is higher than the required load rating.

Having to bin a tyre with 6-8mm of tread because of single screw is very annoying, as is having to change a wheel on a monday morning to get to work.

Don't scrap the tyre unless the screw has caused really obvious severe damage, get professionals such as Tyre Revivers (Islip, Northants..no connection) or similar to repair it properly.

I assume a tyre fitted has said it can't be repaired, tyre fitters that know about repairing them are as rare as an honest politician.

Assuming you're UK in a RHD, FWD car, I'd suggest swapping the front wheels, as the engine and you are on the RH side giving maximum mass. The 'grippiest' (is that a word) tyre would then give maximum benefit on the lightest side.

I understand the problem, it worries me too!

have you tried these retailers -

I know of 2 more French sites but their websites don't show delivery to the UK.

Thanks for the tip on tyre revivers. Spoke to them and they put me intouch with another closer company. The tyre has gone off for repar.

As it will be out for a week I need to get out in the freezing weather and swap one of the rear winters onto the front. Brrrrrrrr

Thanks for the tip about Tyre Revivers, saved me the cost of a new tyre. I spoke to them and as they are not close they recomended a similar company (Meridian) in Bristol. The tyre is now back having been repaired. Despite slowly revolving the tyre many times I can't find the repair so can't fault it.

Having now had some snow the winter tyres have proved their worth. They managed to pull me up a 16% hill and made my commute home on un-gritted country roads pretty uneventfull. Some reviews of the Nokians suggest they don't corner that well in snow, which seems to match my experience but I have not used any other winter tyres to compare them against. The mondeo was useless in the snow last year on summer tyres, struggling for grip on even the slightest incline, but now I don't need to worry too much where I take it.

Thanks for the responses.

...as soon as you put them on, temperatures for the rest of the winter will never get below 45degF

I too understand the problem, especially as I have a 4x4, where the manual explicity mentions the need for the tyres to be matched. Indeed the manual recommends rotating the tyres every 3000 miles - the fronts wear at twice the rate of the rears.

I went for all season tyres with snowflake markings as my everyday tyre - but there was a 6 week delay getting them in my size as they only come in in batches.

I bought an additional spare wheel - so I have six wheels, and I swp the front two (only) with my two spares every 6000 miles or so. This means that even if I destroy one tyre (I do some off roading, so the chances are increased) I still have 5 matched tyres. I know this is the expensive way of doing things, but I'll be keeping the 4x4 long term, it makes tyre rotation easy and I'm actually using the spare(s).

Tyres with a nail in can be repaired if it is on the tread but not on the tyre wall. There is a diagram on the web somewhere that I have seen before when searching for tyres that shows exactly the repairable part of the tyre. And yes as already said put your "grippiest" tyres on the front if you are in front wheel drive, although that doesn't mean the rear doesn't need grip!!

Took my daughters Polo in for a couple of 'ordinary' Avons yesterday.

On arrival I spotted a 60-plate Porsche Panamera on the hydraulic lift.

It was in for 'snow-tyre' fitting at £375.00 a corner! Still, when you've spent approx £70K I guess you want to be sure your motor stays on the road?

I got away with £95.00...

You should always put new tyres on the rear, irrespective of whether it's front- or rear-wheel drive.

Why?

(That's assuming that you can - my BMW has different size rear tyres and I ain't changing them every time I need new front ones!)

I'd buy either a different tyre in the same load & speed rating (if desperate, I wouldn't worry about the speed rating), or a new pair for the front and keep the remaining good one as a spare.

I'm running different makes on the rear of my Saab estate, both 94 load ratings, but one is H-rated (which is all I need) and the other is V-rated, for the same reason as you, there were none available in the original make and speed rating when I needed a replacement.

would`nt worry about the speed rating??? If you haad to make a claim on your motor insurance you`d worry then !

The wrong speed rating on a tyre would be a heaven sent reason for the insurance company to refuse to entertain your claim. That is one of the first things that is checked !

Cheers, Smileyman for the links. I have managed to purchase my winter tyres from Reifen.com.. this of course now means that we will have the warmest January on record!!.

Not my understanding. The speed rating for the snow tyres recommended by the manufacturer is H rating, V rating is higher, therefore I am meeting the recommended speed rating on that tyre as well.

I'm confident that this is not an issue for two reasons. Firstly, back in 1997 I had a Mondeo as a company car with V-rated tyres. One of the fronts had an unrepairable puncture, so the mobile tyre fitters fitted a tyre in an H-rating. I was unhappy about this and spoke to the lease company. They assured me it wasn't an issue as, even thought the H is lower rated, the manufacturers specification was only for H-rating - clearly Ford had got a good deal on V-rated at the time my car was built! Secondly, when the V-rated was fitted to my current car´, I was assured by the garage (major VW dealer in the area) that this was fine. They also told me that here in Austria it's illegal to repair extra-load (XL) tyres, which mine were, hence the new tyre and not a repair.

So I stand by my comment, with the clarification that as long as the tyres at least MEET the manufacturer's speed rating, even if they are different, then that is OK.

H rated 130mph, V rated 149mph. For a winter tyre presumably just going to be used during the current poor weather, is not going to matter. I would be glad to get up to 60 on the rural roads I commute on now. My summer tyres are V rated but my winters are H rated.

In most european log books the tyre size and speed rating is listed any deviation without a TÜV certificate is quite a serious offence especially if you are involved in a serious accidents.

The only problem with winter tyres is... - WellKnownSid

As in Spain. The car's technical certificate details the tyres fitted to the car when first registered and ALL allowable combinations as per the CoC. Any variation requires an engineer's evaluation and a new technical certificate.

Also, tyres on the same axle need to be exactly the same brand and pattern and rating.

My handbook and Mazda dealer confirmed, what I said. Although my new car came fitted as standard with 93 load V rated summer tyres, as long as my winter tyres are 93 load, I can use T, H or V speed rated winter tyres. My winter Pirelli Sottozero's arrived on wednesday from Germany. Unfortunately all our snow has gone.At least I won't get caught out again. For Info. My paramedic mate has been using Autosocks on his VolvoT6 Ambulance car in snow, ice and blizzard conditions and he says they are the dogs nuts. Well worth keeping a pair in your boot.
