Is it time to increase the penalty for driving without Insurance? 6 points and £200 is not much of a deterrent when, if someone gets away with it for a year they stand to be quids in given the high premiums charged for many individuals.

Points on a licence are no good if there is no license held. No license and no insurance often go hand in hand.

I'm told that the losses caused by these parasites add £30 to each law-abiding driver’s policy.

Crushing their cars isn't much of a punishment either because the cars are generally worth a few hunderd pounds.

Jailing may be the answer. Don't bleat on about overcrowded prisons, the Royal Navy is decommissioning ships, why not lock them up on board ships for a while, there were prison hulks 200 years ago, why not bring the concept back?

Subs would be better. Any misbehaving - let the water in. Chin level to start with.

You do not think for one minute that if suddenly everybody insured their car the premiums would drop.

No, it's a one-way ratchet system (or of you prefer, a one-way racket system).

Why not make the fine equal what they should have paid for basic insurance plus 50%?

What!, a common sense approach that makes it advantageous to do the right thing in this country?, or conversely to disadvantage those who steal from and cheat the rest of us?, it'll never catch on.

Better to penalise the law abiding majority by making them pay for the non contributors in every walk of life, culling child benefits for those who work hard being a prime example.

It's the modern British way, unless you happen to be a politician or celebrity then get your nose in the trough and do what you like.

No no no.

Work out what the average cost is to the insurance company when one of these idiots has an accident, and add 50% to that.

If that turns out to be 20 grand, so be it.

And if they won't pay out, send the bailiffs around, or take it out of their benefits if applicable. 50% reduction until paid off.

I lived in switzerland and no insurance certificate = no licence plates, and your insurance isn't cancelled until you have proof you no longer have the car! So if you sell your car, you keep your number plates to put on the new one and the new car is registered with a fresh certificate! it is not rocket science to make the previous owner of a car liable until the car is registered or until it has been sold to an accepted dealer and the notification received by swansea. make it an offence for the trade to sell any vehicle without proof of insurance and a tax disc and proof of a driving licence. For a fee I am sure that the post office will check all these documents and stamp temp transfer of ownership. This will remove some of the burden from DVLA too. Finally, if you sell your car get some proof of who is buying it because if you don't you are liable for parking fines, speeding tickets etc.

Ps If you communicate with DVLA send it recorded delivery, and keep the proof! They "lost" my driving licence change of address but when I quoted the recorded delivery number they accepted it had been sent.

The real problem is people who just buy a cheapo car for cash and drive off in it. These guys will just buy an old car for say £500 and drive without RFL or Insurance, and if they get caught, they don't give a FFIAT because the maximum they will get done for is the cost of the crushed car (£500). Any fines or other penalties imposed don't mean anything to these twerps: they will still drive. Points? Where we're going we don't need points ...

Some years ago they - not sure which agency it was - used to go down the road and any untaxed or unisured car would be clapped or removed

Doesn't happen no more, I wonder why?

No insurance. No MOT. No road tax. Banned drivers or no licence at all.

All so easily solved. New licence plates every year, stamped with month and date of issue. None of the above, you don't get yer plates.

How hard can it be?

You could even get presses set up in HM prisons, make them earn their keep (if they're not too busy making illicit hooch). No more silly illegally spaced digits or ones that look like they've been done with a paint brush either.

My method would keep the prison population down. Driving without insurance,MOT, Licence etc. would result in the removal of one finger. Re-offending would also become more difficult as each time another digit would be removed.

In my ideal world this penalty would also apply to burglars, car thieves, muggers, drug dealers, and all other such like scum.
