Clarke; Sealey - MIG Welder - Gregory II

Hi.

I am wondering if back roomers can recommend a good welder. I am looking to do a small amount of welding, so I do not want to spend a large amount. Which welders are generally known to be the best, i.e. Clarke or Sealey, and can anyone point me in the direction of any bargains around. I understand that gas is the best bet based on results.

With thanks

Gregory

Have a look on ebay, there are very often bargains to be had. If you are buying a Mig welder, try and find a cheap DC one they are much easier to strike an arc with. If you are not welding very thin metal an ordinary stick arc welder will probably suffice, I find them easier to use.

Is there much in it with regards to the different makes around? Are the gasless welders ok for minor work? Any recommendations? Thanks again.

I bought a Clarke MIG from Machine Mart a few years back - cost about £200. Came with free facemask (rubbish, bloke in shop suggested a better one straight away!) and bottle of gas.

Got some steel offcuts from local engineering shop to practice on and then set to on the Vitesse bodywork.

Machine has been fine and has performed well.

Most of those available are very similar, Clarke are OK. A gasless one is better for using outside as the wind tends to blow the gas away, you do need to get the metal clean to get a good weld with a MIG, stick welders are not so fussy.

What do backroomers think of the welders on this web page. Which one would you guys go for taking into account the fact I would like to only complete a set amount of welding on a rare basis. With thanks again!!

Does anyone here have any view points on the welders shown with the Express Tools store as to which one would be best for me. I am not sure about the gasless option. Is this an easier device to use or not. Being in the outdoors means I would need a very much perfect day with the gas option.

Can anyone recommend a good supplier for a welder. I am veering onto the sealey one, but I am wondering if this is a good price/ deal from express tools.

Thanks

The Sealy stuff is generally ok for a bit of DIY, plus they do have some spares backup. Pick whichever one you want depending on the type of work you're going to do ie. the max metal thickness. Gas ones can be used with gasless wire if required. Gasless work ok but are are a bit messy.

Brought a Gas less MIG Welder from Screwfix about a year ago. It was £90, yes 90 quid. Had never welded before and used it to weld up chassis on old Triumph Herald I had aquired. Got a mask for about £11 from toolshop. Gasless MIG is OK for general jobs and eventually did a reasonable job.
