Got some 'perishing' near the rims on the tyres on the Santa Fe - they're 2.5 years old from new, done 35000 miles, the fronts are getting low but the rears are still holding 4mm tread. Need to replace them but do Kumho's perish and age quickly? Seems to be happening quickly on this set.

If not Kumhos, what others are worth a look at?

Ive got pirelli's on mine, cant remember the exact model but they have been spot on. I changed up a size to 235/70/16 if I remember rightly. Slightly larger footprint and rolling radius to help with the fuel consumption. Far better than the Falkens they were on previous and the kumhos that I had on my grand vitara.

Which Falkens, the 452's or 912's? (numbers quoted from memory but something like that!)

Kumhos in general are fantastic tyres for the money and only their Korean manufactures stops them from being regarded (and priced) as a premium product. (it could be said the same is now true of Korean cars!) Take a look at the user reviews on Black Circles for more info.

On the subject of the perishing - I wouldn't have thought that this was necessarily grounds for immediate replacement. The structural integrity of a tyre comes from the casing, not the rubber that is glued to it. However, cracking of the sidewall rubber could be indicative of an underlying condition with the tyre's structure. Prolonged running underinflated will do this.

Whatever rubber you end up with if you do change, maybe you'd consider rotating the tyres front to back to even out the wear so that you can have newer tyres all round at shorter intervals rather than being left with 2 that are aged but with plenty of tread?

I took the Santa into the dealer today, he gave the tyres a clean bill of health, said it was only superficial. On that basis I'll let them get to the next service at 40K and then look at changing. I am delighted that they have lasted so well on what is a largish car. As I may even change the car next spring I could even get away without the investment.....;)

Backs up what likerocks says about Kumhos. Will certainly get them rotated next time. I notice though the new Hyundais in the showroom were wearing either Hankooks or Continental, wonder why they've changed.

Kumhos are great, I had a couple of sets years back when they were still cheap. More of a medium range tyre than a budget now. Last set of tyres I bought were Nangkangs, which are cheaper, handle just as well, but seem a bit quieter.
