When's the best time to buy a new car? - P3t3r

I'm considering buying a new car in the next few months and want to know the best time to buy. I really want to order the car around the end of December or early January. I know the best time to buy is usually at the end of the month but is this still true in December? I suspect that nobody will want to buy a car at this time and the salesmen will have no chance of reaching their targets. On the other hand they may want to get every sale they can.

I'm tempted to say I want to buy at the end of December but I'll buy 'now' (it will be early December) if they can offer me a good deal. This may be a good way to squeeze more discount out of them.

Any recommendations?

Usually December should be a good time as sales are slow with people wanting a car with a later date. But this year January and February may be slower as more sales will probably be made in December to avoid the increas in VAT.

Retail sales in general are down 2% in Scotland

Increased insecurity of jobs, VAT, freeze on slaries...............it will be leaner picking for gargages and all retailers for the foreseeable future.

Mind you Subaru franchises seem to have rose tinted specs as their cars are not really selling new and the 2nd hand 2 litre + Legacys and Outbacks are rooted to the tarmac.

A friend today said she had downsized from Focus to a Yaris - cheaper insurance, RFL, less petrol - she forgot the £4,000 on HP, however.

Saving and spending is confusing to some people - the Focus was paid for!

I don't want the car in December either, but it takes 2-3 months to get it.

Not strictly true about the VAT. I will still pay 20% VAT even if I purchase now. The VAT rate depends on when I take delivery, not when I order the car. So VAT will be exactly the same whenever I pay.

If you pay for it in December you will save the VAT increase

Is that a wise thing to do or could it cause problems if there is a problem with the dealer or the car?

I did ask whether I would only need to pay 17.5% VAT on my deposit and they said I would need to pay the full 20% even if I paid the deposit this year. I could pay the full amount, but I'm a bit unsure about the potential risk. Do you think it's a good idea to pay in full long before the car is delivered?

Depends what you are buying and if you have a trade in.

If no trade in start with internet broker prices and give a dealer 30 minutes of your time to beat it. If they can't beat it order online - buying in a showroom continues to be a pain in the butt and dealers need to realise buyers have an easy alternative.

Why not buy a nearly-new car and save several thousand pounds at the same time?

I've looked at this for several months now and due to the high lead times on many cars, nearly news are artificially high and on some models they are higher than "new".

Madness :-)

I agree, new cars seem like much better value. I take good care of my cars and it's also nice to be able to choose the options I want (leather seats, Xenon lights etc.). The car I'm looking at is the 500 TwinAir, so I won't be able to get a second hand one.

The price I can get will probably beat or at least match the online prices. At the moment I don't know whether I'll trade in.

The dealer has offered me less than half the price of a new one for my car which is less than two years old. This sounds pretty poor to me, so I'm going to try other places and try to negotiate a higher price.
