How many manufacturers offer a sound system with full ipod connectivity? That is, the ipod screen or tracks shown on a car screen and full remote control from the steering wheel audio controls.

Nissan connect system,,,found in Ntec and Tekna versions of most nissans eg Note, Juke , Quashqai etc,

Also my old 03 Xtrail...as I installed a Pioneer Avic F900BT which does all that you mention and loads loads more.

I have this on my '09 Hyundai i30, (I think it is on most of the current range, possibly on new Toyotas too)

With the iPod plugged in, steering wheel controls work to skip to next/previous track, adjust volume etc,, track name displays on car info screen, but you don't have all the menu functions available directly on the iPod itself.

I've used the Dension Gateway300 as an add-on.
www.dension.com/en/multimedia-adapter/gateway-300

iPod is charged.
Playlists, tiltes, Artist, etc are displayed on the radio screen - 4 lines with horizontal scrolling text (not top class but OK).
Full remote control from the radio and steering wheel.
Sound is good.
Some contraints like 99 track limit as system is based on CD changer interface.
iPod is out of sight in glove box.

Check the Dension site for other variants.

None of the manufacturer systems I've seen have been any good (maybe there some good ones..), I find it easier to pick a car that can have the standard HU replaced (well they're usually rubbish anyway) and put in an aftermarket system that does the job properly!

I'm not a gadget expert, but I have found the Nissan Connect system works well enough for me. Perhaps it is because I don't expect it to do much more than the simplest of things. It plays my music, talking books etc with control from the steering wheel with the display on the sat-nav screen..... I'm happy with it.

As long as I can get Radio 4 and Radio Scotland on the car radio I am happy.

I have steering wheel controles on my car but I prefer to turn the knobs and push the buttons on the Radio/CD/tape Player.

i-pods - that's for folks much younger than I.

I think I may be fussier than most! I expect my in-car integration to handle 30+ Gb of music, to list albums, playlists and artists (as per the normal iPod menu) and to list them instantly - no 2+ minute delay to load track information as occurs with some systems. It must have no restrictions on the number of artists, albums, number of playlists or tracks per playlist. It must charge the iPod and allow it to be stored hidden from view whilst still connected. It must show track, album and artist name on the display too. It must also (phew) allow me to jump to within 10,20,30, etc percent of a list, to enable quicker navigation within the large number of albums I've got... Random play is nice too.

If the Nissan system can do all that (my aftermarket HU can) then I'll be impressed, and Nissan will be on my shopping list for my next car...

Oh, and I expect top notch sound quality, none of this "good enough for the radio" rubbish most cars offer.

Nissan connect does do all that lot - smoothly easily and without fuss. On the Note it also has a small lidded cupboard that has the USB socket and a 3.5mil jack within it.

" It must also (phew) allow me to jump to within 10,20,30, etc percent of a list, to enable quicker navigation "

OK this is kinda catered for. There's a side bar with a slider that you can quickly drag down. But it doesn't go in your stated increments you have to judge it for yourself.

Since it's an Ipod connceting system ..only 30GB? The classic has 160GB storage which it handles easily -though I only have 50GB of music and movies stored on it.. However the Connect system doesn't play the movies - in my other car the Pioneer Avic F900BT does play the movies too.

I suggest you take your Ipod to a dealer and try it out for yourself.

Hope that helps,

Mmm, if it is as good as you say, then I surely am impressed. I remain sceptical until I've seen one in action! :) I do have the 160 Gb iPod, but sadly I "only" have 35 Gb of music at the minute, time to hit iTunes...

"Nissan Connect system works well enough for me."

Ditto, Kia cee'd standard connection. Can use playlist or random mode; volume and track-change on steering wheel. Filename on trip computer screen

Indeed the Nissan connect system does work very nicely. On the 2010 Ntec Note that I have there's a USB socket (and a 3.5mil jack) in a small lidded cubby hole on the dash. so your Ipod can sit out of sight along with perhaps glasses and garage door opener etc. It's very well thought out and convenient. Easy to get the connect system to warn you about the 'Safety' Camera's too.

If it has a small niggle compared to my Pioneer Avic F900BT (in my other car) it would be that the Connect system won't play DVD's or video from my Ipod. Which I tend to use while parked up waiting for SWMBO. It's a very good system but the screen resolution isn't as good as on the Pioneer. Plus the Pioneer has connectivity to add Tv tuner &/or rear camera, DAB tuner or what have you.

in car tech has moved on a bit from the old days hasn't it. I used to be happy if the radio (with one speaker) just had push button station presets!

Although I used the iPod as an example in the question, I suppose I could expand it to any media storage device. I listen to a lot of music in the car, in fact it is probably my main place for listening (wife doesn't have same tastes as me). I use an iPod, generic MP3 player and MP3/Audio CD's in my Mazda and I find the best is the MP3 CD's. They obviously haven't got the capacity of an MP3 player but they allow steering wheel control and track display on the dash.

I wasn't really sure whether manufacturers were being slow to introduce fully integrated MP3 systems. Is it Fiat who have a Windows based system with a USB connection?

Any - ipod connectivity - Ethan Edwards

I'm pretty sure both my Pioneer AVIC F900BT and the Nissan Connect system use Windows (CE probably). I'd bet good money that they probably all use the same Windows based operating system (poss Linux? -anyone know).

BMW with the right options offer full connectivity along with album art, expensive though!

Surprised nobody has mentioned Fiats Blue and Me, as fitted to the Punto Evo i drive.

USB port, steering wheel controls plus voice activation, 8gb Memory stick and enough music to keep you going for months, and it sounds excellent to.

Test drove a Bravo a couple of years ago but never got a chance to try out the memory stick function. Looked like a very good idea though and is very simple.

Just read about a fully integrated system that is to be offered by BMW. It displays the iPod screen on the cars information screen as well as all the normal remote control functions.
