Average Speed Camera Fines - Ben 10

Has anyone on this forum EVER received a fine for exceeding the average speed limit imposed with cameras. Because it appears more and more vehicles are being driven far faster than the speed limits set, even with the threat of cameras.

People do like admitting they have been caught speeding having said that would you take the risk with all the consquences if you are caught just for the sake of a couple of minutes.

Average Speed Camera Fines - Ben 10

Andy,

I always stick to the average speed limit between these cameras. I just noticed more and more vehicles sailing by irrespective of the limit displayed and wondered if the whole system is a dud. That's why I posted. If anyone can prove these systems are live, then surely there are people out there that have had fines. I'm just asking for proof one way or the other.

I have had some cases in. I think generally though people are much more careful when they know they are in a monitored zone and generally watch their speed more - so they deter rather than acting as a prosecution device.

I have also noted that people are pretty good about sticking with the specified limits, but that local people who know the restriction well will often open up and leg it immediately after the last camera. You will often find one of these heroes up your back bumper in the last half a mile of the restricted area.

Like Ben10 I too often wonder how people manage with the average speed camera's ?

M25 to M3 is 50 and i see cars sailing along at 80+ in total oblivion so do they get prosecuted or are they false plates ? or do they really not care ?

M25 dueing rush hour with speed restrictions up and some cars ( mostly foreign plated ) charge along at twice the speed !

Why do foreign plates get away with it in this country but we get ticketed if we are abroad? are we really that soft ?or stupid ?

That one is particularly annoying as the 50 zone extends well past the point where M3 and joining M25 traffic has safely merged.

Motorbikes of course can't be picked up by forward-facing SPECS cameras, and I've seen people tailgate artics approaching the first camera so their plate can't be read, then zoom off. I don't know at what point/range the cameras reads your plate.

Completely agree with you.

There have been large sections of the M6 for months & months with roadworks & variable speed cameras. Most people, not all but most, stick to the reduced limits or thereabouts.

On the other hand there has been a section of the M62 which has had roadworks for a while with NO cameras & the only person driving at or near the limit is me.

so they deter rather than acting as a prosecution device

All that speed cameras do is catch those breaking the legal speed limits; that they do it so efficiently (& I'm speaking as one caught out by them) is the reason people dislike them. The prime objective is to deter law breaking & if this is self funding, so much the better

If you get flashed by a German speed camera with British plates you have absolutely no chance of being prosequted, there is no workable agreement between most countries first they have to prove where the vehicle came from who was driving speak the respective language send out documentation its just not worth the time or money to follow through.

Now if you ge stopped in any country by a real live policeman then you will get fined but the UK has taken most patrols of the roads and relies totally on cameras unlike mainland europe

In my humble opinion, all the camaras in the uk will only catch and impact the law abiding citizen who makes a slight infringement and have everything to loose, and so pay up and shut up !! The none legal driver will still tear about as they know that no ticket will drop on their door mat as the car,s not register to them, and if they ger caught all that happens is the car taken and a small fine usually with time to pay, as the police and the courts know that this small percentage of the population are not put off driving illegally even with a custodial sentence . So it makes better sense for the system to concentrate on the part of the population that makes a cash cow !!, I would prefere to see the sort of system you get in Europe where the police will roll up and block a road and look at the driver and docks off all cars passing through imagin how many that could catch, so I say and it hurts me to let's get moor police in cars getting the c@:/p off the road, (dam never thought I would say that) and yes I have had a 6mth ban back in the 80s on the M1 riding an RG500 and I am awaiting 3 points for going 36 in a 30

quite agree , and the old Rg500 was an excellent machine but mine used to get about 19mpg and a real tank slap at around 136, those were the days

RG500? yum yum. Have the RD500 at the mo'. Somehow I have no points on my licence!

Average Speed Camera Fines - track

An answer to the question, yes both my mam and aunt have been cught exceeding avrage speed checks, one on the A1 around the Leeds area during roadworks and the other on the M1 somewhere on route towards the M25, again roadworks.

As far as driving abroad is concerned, Ive happily pulled more than double the limit in a neighbouring country and never had any problems. then again I barely seen other cars never mind police or cameras etc. Best part though was the lack of debris, potholes, roadworks and stupid signs.

Average Speed Camera Fines - concrete

The average speed cameras seem to deter excessive speed that is true. This is no good for the money hungry 'safety camera' brigade. There were fixed average speed cameras on the A77 for some time, but because people got wise and more or less observed the limit the money dried up. Guess what? They were removed and now we get mobile camera vans, stinks a bit in my humble opinion. Regarding travelling through areas with these devices though, I always stick fairly close to the HGV speeds which can sometimes indicate quite a bit above the limit. But they are using a Tachograph which should be very accurate whereas my speedometre probably isn't. The annoying part is, there is always some timid soul who will insist on doing 48mph in a 50mph zone. If their speedometre is reading high then are only probably doing 44ish. This then bunches the traffic as HGV and others catch up but do not like overtaking. On the whole though drivers are usually quite well behaved around these cameras because you just never know.
