I am looking for assistance with my 2006 Focus 1.6TDCI  LX (110). I have only had it for a couple of months and bought it off a dealer near to where i live, it has done around 65k miles. I have a couple of issues and dont appear to be getting anywhere with my local ford specialists and therefore am seeking further assistance. The first problem is that the engine has recently started cutting out without warning when the engine is at low revs or in idle. I have taken it to a mechanic who can not find error codes or particular problems with the vehicle. I have done extensive research on this problem and this seems to be a very wide problem. The second issue is that despite the book figures of average MPG of 60, and other people's review figures of around 55 MPG average, i am only averaging around 40MPG and i mainly do long journeys. I look forward to your reply.

sounds like an EGR valve fault, sounds crazy but go to a peugeot/citreon specialist. Its a peugeot 1.6 hdi engine. They may be better at diagnosing and helping you.

Would an EGR valve fault lower the MPG or is this just for the cutting out?

The saga continues...... car just cut out on a roundabout and wouldn't start again. I had to push it off the road and once the car had been pushed it then started fine. My mechanic clearly doesnt know whats wrong with it so could someone please give me some ideas.

Doesn't sound like an EGR to me. I'd check the injectors and fuel delivery pump. Does it always fire up normally when cold? If no it might be the DMF.

Cutting out could be due to air ingress into the low pressure fuel system , through either a badly fitted fuel filter, or the low pressure fuel system connectors.

However, the relatively high fuel consumption would not be explained by this, unless fuel was leaking and you would know about that.!

Always fires up normally, unless it has just cut out whilst driving and then the engine wont start. the problems dont exclusively occur when the engine is cold either.
