What sort of car do you drive? - Avant

A lot of you have joined us since we re-launched the forum back in March. Whether you're a new or long-standing member, it might be fun to find out what sort of car you drive.

If you like, by all means also say where you live and / or what you do for a living - but there's no pressure and please ignore this whole thread if you prefer!

I'll start the ball rolling:

2009 Skoda Octavia vRS TDI estate

SWMBO - 2009 Mini Cooper convertible

And I'm lucky enough to have had a small windfall a couple of years ago and so have a 2001 BMW Z3 2.2 as a fun car.

I live near Reading and I'm training manager for a large firm of accountants (so boring on two counts, trainer and accountant....). Also church organist at Sonning-on-Thames.

The daily runaround is a 2002 FIAT Marea Estate with 300,000km on the clock. Most practical and underated car ever, would never have looked twice at a FIAT until I owned this one. Only one alternator and a precautionary cam belt change in the last 3 years / 100,000km, returns 48mpg day in day out.

SWMBO drives a 2009 Skoda Fabia - the school run car.

Fun car is a 1988 W124 E-class.

Currently looking for something interesting like an old Citroen (Traction Avant or similar) as a fourth car to make the garage complete ;)

Run a UK web company, live in Spain.

A 2009 Toyota Avensis 2 litre diesel T2 Tourer (Estate). Great car, does everything it says on the tin. Company car, low emissions, 18% benefits in kind tax, relatively low list price, reliable, comfortable, economical, 55 mpg average over 56k miles in 16 months. Also will swallow a load, carried a single bed in it recently, flat load deck. (I did consider a Volvo V50 estate with the 1.6 edrive diesel engine for only 13% company car benefits in kind tax but thought a 1.6 diesel engine would struggle with the mileage that I do.)

Wife drives a 2004 Skod Fabia 1.4 litre saloon, inherited when my father died, intend to run into the ground.

My fun car is a mountain bike, a racing bike, a hybrid bike, a fixed wheel bike and a folding bike. Strange but all my motoring needs / desires are catered for in 1 car but I need 5 bikes to achieve my cycling pleasure.

An old SAAB 95 2.2tid estate with starship mileage. It's tid because we go over to France quite a lot and the diesel is cheaper. For France I also have a full-size spare and the space saver lives in the garage. Our second car is Toyota Yaris which seems to be quite bomb-proof.

When the SAAB dies eventually might go for last of the 2.2tids rather than a 1.9tid or possibly a Volvo V70 or even XC70.

2010 Fiat Doblo, only had it a few weeks. Sadly our only car so has to serve all roles and purposes. I am a Curate in a posh bit of Birmingham so a Fiat sticks out like a sore thumb among the BMW's, Mercs, Aston's and Rollers!

I have had several Fiats (original Panda, X19, Croma, Seicento, old Doblo) and erm a Hyundai Accent. I do like Fiats, cheap, fun and generally reliable. Only downside was the DPF on the old Doblo.

Had the X type just over a year and almost 17,000 fault free miles. 2008 2.2d auto SE estate with plenty of bells and whistles.

Easily the most comfortable car I've owned, miles just simply disappear, plenty quick enough once rolling. Jag spent a lot on sound supression in the cabin and it shows, four or five passengers have been surprised when I've told them it''s a diesel. One of those cars you just want to sit and enjoy the ride. 30mpg round town, mid 40s on a motorway run and I have seen mid fifites when the M1 had 20 miles of 50 limit.

Next trip is to Suffolk for some camping - 200 or so miles and I'm already looking forward to the trip.

Main problem is my wife has never liked it - for some reason she is never happy being behind the wheel, but likes it in the passenger seat.

My wife still has her Aygo - this will be a keeper. Does everything a car should and after 3.5 years she isn't bored of it. A great all rounder.

2006 Seat Leon FR TDI - 44k - plenty quick enough, used to the turbo lag now, but unforgiving ride!

SWMBO 2009 Ford S-Max 2.2 TDCI Titanium Individual - 12k - excellent in every aspect apart from the trip computer, and despite what HJ says it is not up to Audi standards inside! Makes a superb towcar

1974 NSU Ro80, w***el engine, currently on a SORN but only as I don't have time to use it (2 year old!). Purchased in 2006. Once belonged to Sir John Whitworth. Will carry out a full restoration in about 20 years (when the last child leaves home?!

+Donor 1974 NSU Ro80, Ford V4 conversion; in bits in my shed, the chassis has now gone to the sc***py

Between us, wife and I, we have a Nissan Note which is our proper car and a very tatty Vauxhall Corsa which we will keep going until something expensive goes wrong. (Used for trips to the tip and journeys around the very muddy and pot-holed lanes around here. The Note is planned to last us for many years so the Corsa is saving a lot of wear on it for a while.

I also have an 11 YO MX-5 as a toy.

Having owned a Mazda 6 for five years I purchased a Mazda 5 last year, SWMBO drives a 07 Mazda 3. We like their reliability and comfort amongst other things. I would love a sporty spare car, but with a young family and wife who works shifts(Emergency surgery) spare time is almost non existant.. Spent my career after my apprenticeship working in F1 and WRC.After nigh on thirty years of motorsport, decided I really had enough of 100+ hour weeks and months away from home. Recently moved house and changed careers to work for the Government at Harwell on a large Scientific project.

I currently drive a petrol 1.8 Mazda 6. Had it from new and its now over 7 years old. Its been the most reliable car I have ever owned and will be sad when it becomes necessary to trade it in.

Lexus-Di I am tempted to buy a Luxus 250. The Lexus website has some good demonstrator deals. However, when I have read a test report they always write negative reviews regarding its poor fuel economy, poor ride and poor space in the back and the boot and that it not up to the standards of a BMW 3 series.

How do you rate these areas?

What sort of car do you drive? - dixgas
HI WMO

Regarding fuel economy I have the diesel model so I can't comment on the 250, as for the ride, mine as the 17in wheels and it can be a little skittish on a poor road, thought it might be a better bet on the 16in rims.
AS for the rear space, if you regularly carry 4 6footer you would have a problem, and the boot isn't huge but I find it ok.
Have you thought about the 220d if mpg is a issue?
I did a round trip of over 700mls last week ( 3/4 mway) and av. 46.2mpg
Why not have a test drive and see how you get on.

DJ

P.S see if you can try one with the MM option (built in satnav etc) it's the bees knees.

P.P.S and i didn't drive like the vicar's wife on that run, with a light foot over 50mpg easy.

I've been around on here for a few years but not so much recently. Nothing much has changed! I drive a 2004MY Saab 9-5 Aero estate automatic, currently at 146,000 mainly trouble-free miles, with upgraded engine & suspension. Took early retirement and moved to Austria last year, so only one car now! The car is a great mile-muncher, being comfortable, powerful and stable for the frequent autobahn trips.

When it goes to the great sc***yard in the sky (which doesn't look like being soon thankfully), I will be looking at a Skoda diesel estate, either an Octavia or Superb, depending on finances at the time.....

P.S. looks like the swear filter is working overtime - a bit odd for a common term on a self-help car website!

XJ diesel Sovereign now with 50k on the clock

Seems to be able to average, circa, 40mpg, is reasonably nippy (previous car was XJR!) and is supremely comfortable. Would consider changing it for another XJR but not sure i would be happy to return to the ~20MPG ;-), but nothing else could tempt me away from the diesel XJ.

Have a Triumph Sprint ST also.

OH has an astra 1.8 petrol estate.

Subaru Legacy Boxer Diesel with 25K miles

Has not been trouble free and has had a replacement engine under warranty. Other niggles include a clutch release bearing and an engine oil leak. But it is a good drivers car.

Also have a 1996 Pug 405 GLD with 120 K miles that is known as "The Sofa" to my wife. It has been used by family members from new and has been totally reliable.

Me: Megane Sport Tourer, 1.9cDi Dynamique. 57 plate with 63k by me from new. Loads of poke, loads of space and plenty of toys. Had one minor hitch at 3 months, but sorted after 60 mins in workshop, then perfect since, with great mpg.

SHMBO: Grand Scenic, 1.5cDi Privaledge TomTom, 10 plate, 5000miles by her from new. Very flexible (girl guide transporter or music kit to church), great sat nav, user configurable instrument panel, comfy seats and drives well. Town 45mpg, long run 60mpg even loaded.

Daughter : hope to get a Clio on Monday, 1.2 in black, 05 plate with 109,000 miles to learn to drive in (unless any one out there wants to sell me something else cheap to buy, insure and run?).

Saving up for a XF.......once kids left home that is.

My current car is a 2005 BMW Z4 3.0, ideal for what I need in a car 90% of the time and surprisingly economical to run, with my average mileage of about 250 per week I'm really not noticing a vast difference to my Mondeo ST TDCi which only ever returned about 34 - 35mpg, cost wise anyway. What I do prefer is the silky smooth 6 pot BMW engine that heats up quickly on cold days and purrs nicely compared with the clattery old knacker that was the Mondeo :-)

Ho Hum

after 30 years driving

(i) Renault 5 (student car )parked most of the time

(ii)1100cc Polo, put 100odd k on

(iii) 1.9 Td (XUD) engine Bx Citroen, took to 198,000

(iv) Current car a 1998 Ford Galaxy TDI at 222,222 ( and rapidly counting ) now Tiddles is driving, might just might treat her to a 240,000 cam belt change

(v) An Octavia on order for the Missis (DSG box)

sigh

(vi) For me ? a Yeti ( when they introduce the 1.6 diesel Greenline model) to replace the Galaxy

You can reasonably deduce that I absolutly HATE giving car dealers money

PS

I forgot about the three "G" wagens incl a very rare 2900cc automatic van that the missis is currently driving, No1 Son says DO NOT SELL

PPS

The Missis also stuffed a Vento through the hedge at some stage

Best thing for it really

cheers

My current steed is an Alfa Romeo GT 1.9JTDm, Love it really do. Quick, economical and spacious too.

Missus has a Lexus IS220d SE which has been a very good car too. Yes bit tight on space but really good apart from the flat spot at very low revs. Dealers have been a delight and it seems very solidly engineered. About to be replaced with a Honda Accord 2.2 i-DTEC ES GT. we'll see how that goes.

Also have a wee restoration project (been neglected for the last year with its wheels in the air . . .) a 1988 Alfasud Sprint 1.7 green cloverleaf. Great fun when it ran . . . . . . . but the dreaded tinworm has gothe sills and jacking points. . . .

Hiatus for medical reasons but normal driver is Landrover Defender 110, in the garage, a Morgan 4/4 with a hairy engine and in the shed, a Morgan Super Sports Aero, the three wheeled variety.

The three wheeler is the most fun by a long way and unlike some other veterans has enough power to have overtaken some modern cars!
