State of our roads - gramar

We all know we've just experienced the coldest winter in over 20 years and due to the lack of investment in the road network potholes became a hot topic earlier this year. I've just spent a week holidaying around East Sussx and Kent. The roads there are appalling. Potholes, sunken and raised manhole covers and everywhere worn out sections of top surface. Is there anywhere else in the country that's in a worse state?

We live in the East Riding of Yorkshire, roads here not to bad the council is spending some money on the roads for repair and inprovement.I understand your sentiment our road tax money is not spend on roads only a small percentage.Driving to my sister in Rotterdam last year from europoort, new tunnels build and finished nice road surface (invented in the uk) .

North Cheshire / South Manchester roads are quite appalling. As well as as it being a design weakness I blame these on my son having to spend a fortune on new springs for a Vectra C the other week.

You would simply not believe the state of B roads around Macclesfield, Wilmslow, Altrincham, Knutsford etc. at present. My MOT examiner who I've known for years has confided in me the information that so many cars are failing on suspension problems these days due to poor roads.

Yet we travel to North Wales very often, and live around the Abergele area. So much better.

Here in Germany they can be just as bad with the severe heat causing many problems on the Autobahns.Without doubt as already stated Holland has be best roads in Europe.

Belgium has the worst in North West Europe that I've seen... overall ours ain't that bad despite the constant moans about them... in fact pavements are far worse in this country than the roads...

When you travel from Holland into Belgium you really hear and feel the bumb your correct the Belgium roads are terrible.

Hello Andy, what are these auto bahns like these days?Last time i got a lift into germany over fourty years ago everbody put their foot down i got a lift in a borgward nice car.Driving in france this year toll roads are very good but you pay.We drove also on n and d roads very similair than the uk roads.Holland is a small country and they can afford the money to pay for decent roads,I believe the port of Rotterdam pay a lot towards the infrastructure.I suppose it all comes down to money our banking friends need feeding in the city :)

They still put their foot down... I find them quite bumpy at times, especially when you cross bridges! Decent lane discipline, though!! There seemed to be a lot of road works around this year though... and growing year by year...

They have had a massive rebuilding program of all autobahns, here in the east they are all new and in the derestriced parts they are like race tracks 200kph and above is the norm for the outside lane. What I do like is the quality of the services and all the parking areas the UK services are just expensive Mcdonalds and Burger King.

My uncle had an Isabella and his wife an Issetta that was many years ago.

I'm not surprised Kent/Sussex isn't the only area where road maintenance/safety is a low priority. I guess I'm lucky to live in Suffolk and work in Cambridgeshire because our roads are in pretty good shape.

I am still dodging potholes, sunken manhole covers and grates, large splits in the road surfaces etc.here in my neck of the woods(rural Oxfordshire). On my commute to work there are some that are still awaiting repair from when I reported them at Christmas.,and there are a few where the white markings around them have been worn off and had to be re-done. Although they are rural A-roads they are carrying a large amount of commuter traffic. Yet if you travel into the main towns(Oxford,Banbury, Bicester etc.) the roads appear to be fine.

Buy a CX/XM/Xantia.....

or if you don't want to breakdown all the time a Lexus LS400.

They all smooth over the cracks, potholes and speed bumps (or in the case of cushions simply straddle the bumps :)

A lot of the worn out surfaces I saw were on minor A and B roads where there were no humps, sleeping policemen or other obstacles. In fact I saw very little in the way of 'obstructions'. I covered approx 350 in Kent East Sussex and was glad to leave via the A21 which is in good repair.

I should also add that I was in North Kent around the Sevenoaks, Tunbridge Wells area Oct 2009 and covered a couple of hundred miles on similarly shocking roads. So last winter cannot be entirely to blame.

The roads West Yorkshire and particularly in Huddersfield have been bad for as long as I remember (I've driven here since 1961) but to be fair, there are specific reasons why:

1) Lots of heavy traffic across the Pennines used to use A roads through the town and now runs to and from M62 and M1/A1

2) Water mains from the upland reservoirs feed other towns in West Yorkshire, these are old Victorian mains which are dug up and replaced piecemeal, leaving filled trenches which break up at the edges.

3) Similar issues with gas, electricity and sewage under main roads.

4) Lots of salt in winter (necessary because most roads have frequent gradients) which depresses the temperature as it melts the ice so causes cracking.

Compare these problems with the mostly flat , rural areas like East Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and East Anglia and it is no surprise their roads are generally better.
