Just so you know, I know very little about engines! I have a 1999 Mazda MX5, which has done 75,000 miles. About a week ago it started making a rattling noise when accelerating at low revs, and I thought nothing of it, it just sounded like the exhaust as loose or something. Yesterday it got a lot worse and sounded like it was coming from the engine. I checked the oil and it was almost out, despite the car being serviced only 2 months ago and no signs of a leak. I filled the oil and tried driving to a local garage but within a mile it stalled when the revs dropped low, so I called the AA.
The garage has said their engineer has looked and the cam shaft is fine, and is convinced it's something in the bottom end which they can fix by stripping the engine for £1,700. Does this sound like a reasonable price, and is it likely that they will be able to fix it?
