Peugeot 406 - Peugeot 406 2.1 tdi 5th gear problems (popping out - dan_seed

We recently bought a 1997 peugeot 406 with the 2.1 diesel engine and manual gearbox.

We noticed after a couple of weeks ownership that it sometimes popped out of 5th gear but usually only at low RPM and when you were on and off the throttle.

This has recently got a lot worse and now it will not stay in 5th gear at all.

I am mechanically minded but have never really dealt with any gearbox repairs.

Any advice on what maybe wrong? is it the syncromesh? does that mean a new 'box?

What kind of costs should i expect from a garage?

Its unlikley to be the synchro, that would cause it to crunch when engaging the gear but not normally to drop out. I believe that 5th gear can be accessed by removing the end cover of the gearbox, which is a lot easier than taking it out. I would think that its probably wear on the bearing that's causing the problem but you will need a pretty slick mechanic to do it.
