Hi has anyone bought a car from Kevin Mackenzie Cars or know anything about them?

They are based in Iver Heath in Buckinghamshire. I am thinking about buying a car from them that they have advertised in Autotrader.

Why I am in doubt is because within the ad of the car he was advertised as a Trade seller but there was no email facility or website - just a landline and mobile number. When I called he said I can view the car at their house - they don't actually have a garage - if they did the car would be a few grand more. While it is quite a good price I wouldn't say it is a bargain - I am interested in it as it has the options I've been looking for.

This may be totally legitimate way of keeping costs down but I'm not sure. Is this legitimate practice or something I should steer clear of? Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks

You should not let it put you off completely, though an extra degree of caution should be used.

Hi there,

I’ve not had a very good experience with Kevin Mackenzie at all and the following is just my opinion based on my own dealings with Kevin Mackenzie car sales. Others may have had a more positive experience and it would be good to get a few more opinions.

I saw a 520d that Kevin Mackenzie had advertised on Autotrader and like yourself was sceptical as this was an individual rather than certified dealer or garage and you weren’t saving that much over a car from a reputable garage. I spoke with Kevin on the phone a few times who said that he had a car which I was very interested in, so interested in fact that we spoke about the purchase of it over the phone and how I should go about preparing for this.

He said that no one would see the car before I did on a Saturday morning as I was having to make the 200 mile round trip to get the car and had to arrange for separate transport to get me up to the location of the BMW.

On his advice, I had called my bank to prepare a bankers draft ready for the purchase of the BMW on the Saturday. I called the Thursday prior to picking up the car as I wanted to ensure that it was still scheduled to be serviced the next day (Friday) before I picked it up. The seller said that everything was still on schedule and no one would be seeing the car prior to my visit on Saturday.

I called once again on the Friday afternoon to make sure that nothing untoward had been picked up during the service which he said went fine but could I call back later as he was busy. I did this only to find out that he had arranged another visit from someone to see the car “by mistake” but that there was no chance they were going to buy it as they wanted to trade in a car that he was not interested in. He was to call me back in one hour. No phone call.

Over two hours later I called him to find that the car was now sold and he had in fact arranged this visit the previous weekend but had not told me. I asked whether his customers were actually important to him as a business and was told “that’s the way it goes”.

So be warned of Kevin Mackenzie – although his response on one forum was that he likes to talk to his customers on the phone rather than email, what he does say may be completely untrue. In fact, you may pick this up when you speak to him on the phone yourself as he was always a little rushed and vague. My advice is to follow your gut instinct when talking to people like this.

In my opinion and experience with Kevin Mackenzie, like most bad sales people, he is not interested in customers or trust, but who is going to buy the car the quickest and for the most amount. I wished that he had just been honest and said that he had people seeing it on the Friday evening – I could have waited until the Saturday and not made all the arrangements to pick up the car.

So you may pay slightly more for a car from a reputable garage or dealer, but in my experience they are more honest with you and interested in keeping you as a long term customer.

Hope this was helpful.

Dont let a lack of official website or premesis specifically put you off. I have bought cars from sole trader's who operate from their homes as a means to avoid overheads and therefore pass savings onto customers and have never had any problems. But obviously ask around and inspect the car thoroughly.

It seems that all this guy is guilty of is pretending to be a official dealer rather than the average joe bloggs flogging his private car , i suppose if you look at it like that then make your decisions based on that. IE what you see is what you get, Sold as seen etc, if thats what your gonna do then go through the car with a fine tooth comb , Pull it down and knock down the price, if he dont deal then walk, ITS A BUYERS MARKET and dont let them fool you otherwise eg I Purchase an 06 astra SXI at 10 months old ( a couple of years Ago) From a well know dealership for 7 grand and it was 14k new . you gotta squeeze the dealer HE WANTS YOUR MONEY .

Hear hear! We’re not all bad, honest! I’ve been selling cars from home for many years as a legitimate, fully insurered trader with licenced trade plates. I stick to sub £5k motors with history and have a reputation worth preserving. However, sadly I know plenty of others at this game and the bulk of them are just rogues. This was however always a sideline for me so I was never in desperate need of fleecing money from people. Be wary of most home readers, some are good but remember that many will be flogging stock they’ve bought cheaply at auction, usually because it’s in need of work or lacks history which all too often they stamp up themselves to fake a full history. I’ve seen many a motor I’ve watched pass through auctions with none or no history (not something I’d buy) mysteriously appear for sale shortly after with a full service record. View and buy with care. Nothing to worry about regarding the lack of a website (I don’t have one) or the email contact as some just like talking shop directly.

I too have just had the same experience from Kevin Mckenzie. I called yesterday to see if car was available as I was really interested and was told yes, still available. As I was travelling 2 hours I asked if I could put a £100 deposit down and was told don't worry just call when you are leaving. Unfortunately due to my son being taken to hospital I couldn't leave straight away so called him at 2 o'clock to see if I could come up straight away. He told me that he had made other arrangements and was now not at home. I asked if I could come the following day to which he said yes, no problem just make sure it's in daylight hours. Later that evening I went back on to Autotrader to see the spec of the car again and the advert had been removed. I text Mr Mckenzie and received a reply the next morning saying that the car was sold and somebody from Cornwall had bought it. Obviously this person had gone to see the car the day before and Mr Mckenzie was just stringing me along. They were probably looking at the car when I called him!! Obviously Mr Mckenzie doesn't care about customer service and does have the attitude of 'that's the way it goes' and I shall be purchasing my car from a more reputable place!

I think this happens quite a lot with these "One man bands!" The car is already sold but they keep another buyer "on a string" just in case the original purchase doesn't go through, for some reason.

If all goes to plan, well, for the trader, anyway, they then just fob the "second" purchaser off with excuses. Believe, me, they will have had plenty of practice! After all, they've sold their car, and the second purchaser was just their "insurance" should the sale to the first one fall through.

They are car delars not saints. If they can sell a car they will. You were just his next selling opportunity.. never mind there are more cars out there.

LOGIC,
WHAT A LOAD OF NONSENSE .
The guys not pretending to be anything ,he's selling cars from home and declaring that he's trade .All up front and the correct way to do it .

(Sold as seen etc) there's no such thing ,a car trader / dealer cannot legally sell a car as seen to a private buyer .As a general rule a dealer is responsible for repairs to a car for up to 6 months after purchase .

(Pull it down and knock down the price ) if you rubbish a car a dealers selling without good cause, the dealer will walk away ,no car dealer wants to waste time with idiots .

(HE WANTS YOUR MONEY) No he doesn't , he wants a profit ! If a dealers working from home it's likely his price will be lower than dealers who have the expense of premises .If you waste his time by asking for stupid discounts he'll send you on your way very quickly .After all you made an appointment to view the car because the price was cheaper than others .

Finally ,why do dealers say they'll hold onto a car then sell it to another buyer .Two reasons ,potential buyers often don't turn up and don't bother to ring and say they've lost interest .
As previously said a potential buyer may arrive and make a stupid offer ,so it always makes sense from a dealers perspective to take the first sensible offer that comes along .A bird in the hands worth two in the bush .

Looking at it from the other side of the coin you would not believe how many "dead cert" customers who are coming to "buy" a car never turn up without a word.

Just last week I had one guy who called 7, yes seven, times during the day asking every detail about the car and was going to be there at 10.00am the next day. As often happens, never showed, never bothered calling. It happens time and time again.

To the poster above who had to go to the hospital every dealer has heard this sort of thing 100 times. You may be the 1/100 genuine one but usually if someone is meant to be coming on the morning and calls with some sort of emergency excuse you never hear from them again.

Unfortunately common courtesy has gone out the window with cars - whether dealers or buyers started it I just don't know but the reality is no one has any manners any more. Heaven knows how many buyers you get who are "literally getting in their car now" you never hear from again.

It is a tough old business and if a genuine buyer shows up whilst you are waiting for a maybe it is a brave seller who does not take the sale. I've done the "decent" thing many times only to end up seriously out of pocket.

I have bought from sole traders with great results.

Nice people, good cars .. as advertised.

I expect salesmen to sell cars if they get the chance.. so am prepared to travel and find car sold .. just ring up before to check.

It's life.. I would do the same in their shoes if I had a buyer..

Nothing in life is easy: to trust someone implicitly when you don't know them from Adam is touching ... and naive..

I speak as a cynic I know but many sellers and buyers are honest : I just don't have unrealistic expectations.

Life has been like that since I was born and no doubt for centuries before..

Honestly if you think car dealers are liars try customers. The number who are "on their way" or if it is "a nice car I'll buy it" and then bid £800 under the asking price.

The right car at the right price will sell quickly. If you want it go buy it or accept someone else might.

Additionally, why, as one of the posters above has said they did, travel several hundred miles to see an older second hand so-called 'prestige' car from a one-man band trader with little info (no website), I don't know. As others have said, they are in the business (good or bad) to SELL CARS quickly and mainly to locals, not people half way across the country who want a rare (but not that good) car but don't want to pay a main dealer for the priviledge of a newer one.

I'm sure that the less reputable dealers see these people as 'easy marks', and the good ones not worth the effort as they can't just pop round to see it and take longer to make decisions.

“Honestly if you think car dealers are liars try customers.”

True, very true. I’ve never seen as much dishonesty as I did when selling cars. From pensioners to millionaires and skint students every one of them will lie and fiddle to save a few quid. The law protects the customer but take a customer at face value and take their “in perfect working order with no faults” car in part exchange that later turns out to be absolutely knackered and you’ve no comeback.

I always properly assessed cars offered to me and most were hiding something their owners wanted to sneak past me. From outstanding finance to missing service books on car with supposed full histories to major gearbox and engine faults. You’d be amazed by the dishonesty of Joe Public.,

I’m not saying the trade aren’t often at fault but in any car deal I’ve done I was always the honest party.

So true...I saw some blatant scams perpetrated or attempted by joe public when I was in the trade..in both service and sales depts...amazing what they came up with sometimes.
