this strange rattling sound is doing my head in! it only happens at certain temperature, usually as the engines warming up, its silent when its warm..

it sounds almost like static and is coming from around the auxillary area, could it be the tensioner??

i thought it was baffles in the exhaust but this has been checked,

im sure someone must have heard it before!

sounds like something that the auxilliary belt is driving, the only way to isolate it is to take the belt off and listen again.

You need to use some audio processing to establish the repetition rate for that rattle ( Audio Grabber or the like ) However if you can not see the effect in the Aux belts I would be concerned that this noise is the cam belt tensioner or a cold belt tapping the belt cover. Not Good. Regards Peter

cheers fella it does seem to be coming from the left side of the engine, i doubt its the cam belt tensioner as this was done about a month ago, full kit and waterpump.

How can i check the belt isnt hitting the cam belt cover is it easy enough to take off?

Take it back to where the belt was changed and let them hear it I suspect it may be down to them. Regards Peter

cheers, only trouble is that its really intermittent when it does it, ive had it back and they couldnt hear it as it wasnt doing it,

i find it really strange how its temp related though, i guess i'll live with it!

If it is the cam belt/tensioner then you won't be hearing it for long, and it'll cost you a £1,000 or so. Regards Peter
