I remember driving past a car at the side of the road on the York bypass about 20yrs ago. The driver was sitting there with his white shirt drenched in blood and guts. His windscreen was concave and in the centre of this area the remains of a cock pheasant could be seen, mostly retained in the glass.

Only the juices made it through - but it looked a damn near thing as he would have been doing around 70mph, like the rest of us.

What have you seen along the lines of `unlucky - but lucky` ?

I was driving along an A road at night, following a lorry. As we approached the crossroads a car shot straight across at about 50 mph in front of the lorry. I reckon the driver of the car didn't even notice the give way signs or lines.

Also, I was driving along the A36 and was looking at an oncoming lorry, because it was a Bedford TM and by then they'd become rare. Anyway, something black shot across just in front of the lorry and made it safely to the other side of the road. This was my one and only 'big cat' sighting. Cat shaped, but bigger than a labrador.

Some years ago I heard a story of a British motorist driving too fast on an Alpine pass and on the wrong side of the road. Round a sharp bend he met another Brit coming in the opposite direction, also on the wrong side of the road.

They stopped, and being British simply shook hands and went on their separate ways.

1) A car in front of me was struck by a 6 X 3 sheet of corrugated steel roofing that came out of a skip wagon travelling in the opposite direction on the A500 near to J16 M6.

2) I was witness to a child running out of a field and into the path of a Renault 5 on the A449 near to Stafford in the evening drizzle, if the R5 had missed him I'd almost certainly have hit him travelling in the opposite direction in my Transit van. The boy survived with just broken bones and lacerations
