Golf Mk2 1988 1.6 EZ engine - Steering column shortened ? - Negger

Removed steering wheel, steering lock, re-assembled with new locking washer. On driving the locking washer down, appear to have shortened steering column by about 1/2" (12mm) Have tried drawing back up using large back washers etc with limited success. Have slackened lower universal joint to no effect. Is it possible/probable that the inner column has telescoped down ?, and if so, any suggestions as to how I can draw it back out again ? I haven't yet completely removed steering column, and would prefer not to if at all possible!

Many Thanks

Negger

hi have you hit the steering column with any force, getting it back the 1/2in and keeping there and will be impossible as you have collapesd the column and you will require a new column.

I agree you've collapsed the steering column if you hit it hard. Probably has a collapsible section similar to this photo in it somewhere. http://gallery.oldholden.com/d/278176-4/DSC03934.JPG

Thanks for responses. I only used a drift to drive on the locking washer, shouldn't have put that much pressure on the column itself? Looks like a new column then?

Thanks both for help. Removed and dismantled column and was able to re-set to correct length,re-installed and working fine. Can't understand why it wouldn't draw out whilst still assembled - very simple once dismantled!
