BMW 3-Series E90 - 2007 3 Series - Car Giant or Franchised Dealer? - peterb

Hello all

I haven't posted for some time but I need some advice.

We are considering buying an E90 318i from 2007 or so.

These are about £12k at Car Giant but more like £15k at franchised dealers near where we live (N London). I therefore have 2 questions:

1. How "real" are the sticker prices at franchised dealers? Does £15k really mean £14k or less?

2. What is an appropriate premium for an "approved" car in this price range?

Thanks

Peter

I wouldn't like to say how well you'd do negotiating the main dealer price down, never tried with BM, are you trading another car, if so it's the price to change that's the important one.

It could be that the BMW approved car is in slightly better condition bodywise as they will get first choice if the car is a defleet/closed auction souced, course it could be their own trade in from a preious customer too, you'll have to ask.

Thats not to say the CG car won't be a perfectly decent car too, you'll have to go on condition, mileage, service history, specification etc same as any car.

'premium for approved car'....hmm that really depends on whats likely to go wrong in the first year....my own thoughts would be very little if anything, so with this particular car i would be very happy to save a couple of grand, but i'd want to check and test drive the cheaper car thoroughly, that may not be so easy.

Is there really a £3K difference for identical specced/mileage/month of 07 cars between the two, or are some lower spec/higher mileages/older/minor dents and scratches.

If the real difference between two identical cars is £1K then i'd be having the assurance of a rock solid BMW approved used warranty which IS worth the paper it's written on.

Just one other thought, if your mileage is worth the possible price premium do test a 318/320 Diesel Auto, good to drive auto especially but i prefer auto's, torquey and frugal.

Thanks for the quick and helpful responses Gordon.

Diesels are out because we both hate the noise they make at idle! We also don't do enough miles.

I can't offer any advice here as it is such a long time since I bought a used car from a dealer, but whenever I see BMW's and Audi's in non-franchised outlets, they are mostly high mileage examples with masses of stone chips and small dents.

Personally, I would rather budget for a little more and buy from a franchised dealer.

Hello peterb. I'm not the World's #1 fan of BMW, but are you sure that you hate the noise that much? The 320d doesn't sound bad at all to my ears (and I assure you, I've never been a cheerleader for diesel).

Gordon gave good advice about the auto as well. I get 45mpg (combined) easily, and it drives very, very well.

As to the economics, it's a tough call. I've never been impressed by the "don't do enough miles argument". That's more relevant when you plan to buy new and sell after 3 years. I find the best way to assess the relative cost of diesel versus petrol is to estimate how many miles I expect to be doing in total during my expected ownership of the car, and how long that I intend to keep it. Then I simply crunch the numbers on a spreadsheet. Sometimes petrol wins, sometimes diesel - but never assume anything.

Hope this helps.

PS My dealer is in North London, and I think they are excellent. Are you looking at the same one, I wonder?

Also have a look at the warranty. I haven't got experience of Car Giant etc either, but IU'd imagine that whatever warranty you get will be fairly basic with lots of exclusions.

BMW dealers will have some form of BMW-sponsored warranty.

Alternatively, try a BMW used car specialist. My Z3 came from James Paul near Horsham (google James Paul BMW and you'll find them) and although seven years old was immaculate. They gave a 6-month warranty and I bought a further 2 years for a reasonable amount..

Thanks all

We've purchased a 3 year old 318i SE from Coopers in Reading (no connection). Sensibly priced and a decent trade-in for Mrsb's Yaris.

Thanks to their sensible price, decent trade-in offer, 12 months MOT, road tax etc, the extra cost compared to Car Giant was small.
