Now that the Santa Fe seems to have a good powerful engine, I think that most of the boxes are ticked. I am looking for a car that has some ability off road but not one that can drive to the top of a mountain. Where I want to go I have seen X5s and AllRoads get stuck, little more than a boggy grass field (and yes they did have proper tyres) and was wondering if the Santa Fe would meet the same fate. I don't think that low ratio is necessary, hence why not looking at other makes.
Any one know how these perform offroad? The X-trail is I believe quite good (for what I would be doing) but it is too small as I will need the space.

Nice machine isn't it. Not sure about the centre console but everything else is spot on by the looks of things.
It's fairly heavy, which would be bad for boggy ground. Although with the right tyres I doubt that would be of too much concern.

More problems are caused by the drivers than the vehicles;I've got out of areas in a RWD where 4WD were well bogged.

JC, I suspect that you are right, but as Craig points out, there is a weight issue, and surely however good you are, the laws of physics must kick in. Isn't that why Subarus are so good off road, because they aren't too heavy? Out of interest what RWD vehicle were you in?

RT -- treat yourself to one of those 2 hour offroad driving lessons.
It's good fun. You get experience at handling the situations. Plus you can ask them questions.
A lot of the places use the heaviest 4x4s around (Range rovers / discos etc.) but i suspect that's 50% because most people see these as "cool" off roaders (me too!).
jc2 -- you're preaching to the converted, i drive a ~2 tonne RWD (BMW 7), and i've never been stuck at the local r/c flying field and at the gate is a *mud bath* every autumn + spring!

Spent some time in Belize and the Kia Sorrento and Hyundai Santa fe are quite popular ( along with the Land Cruiser Prado) with the well to do there. I've seen them on dirt tracks and abysmal roads there and they do fine although I'm talking about the
previous generation cars.
