It still offers some sort of ID and card based means most people put it straight in their wallet/purse. In that respect it's handy as I use it as ID to pick up parcels from Royal Mail sorting office etc.

Also in an emergency its probably the only thing in your wallet with your address on, which could prove vital. And it doesn't disintegrate in the wash should you forget it's in your jacket!

Unification requiring the old UK paper licence to be reconciled with the euro photocard - we end up with a bodge combination. How the Europeans prove their vehicle class permissions I don't know - microchip on it or something? Presumably once our officials have the same technology the paper licence will be dropped. Meanwhile mine would only give reliable photo ID for two currants in a bowl of rice pudding...

Probably the same way as we do - they are on the back of the photocard.

Guilty as charged... So is it just the endorsements section that requires the paper counterpart?

Very useful for anyone who looks under 25 years old when purchasing: alcohol, fireworks, cracker (they have explosives in them!), cigarettes. Also for helping to get into clubs, pubs with doormen, cinemas with age restricted films. Or so I am told by my children. They mind less about losing the photocard part of their licence than losing their passports!
The youth of today have been well and truly softened up ready for the ID cards, as they need ID for most things they want to do even if they are legally old enough.

Personally I still have my old style licence, which I will hang on to for as long as possible.

The only part of the license that is recognised round the world is the card with the mug shot on.

The only place I have needed the paper part is to hire a car in the UK, and to give to the clerk of the court for him to scribble on.

That seems rather strict. A mate's got jury duty at the moment and dosn't have a current passport (the photo on his expired passport looks nothing like him now) or photo driving licence, he phoned the court before hand and they were okay with this, just needed a couple of bills.

I keep the photo card in my wallet as even at 30 I still get asked for ID to buy alcohol often by someone younger than me.

I switched to a Spanish one ten years ago to simplify things (it carries the same number as my Spanish/EU nationals' residence card, of which more later). When I renewed a few months ago I finally got a plastic (rather than bendy card) licence and was quite pleased to see it no longer has my address. (I am quite OK for hotel receptionists to copy my name and ID number but I do not want all and sundry knowing my address, which, incidentally, only a uniformed police officer can legally require.) The dreaded points (I'm still clean!) are kept on a database and not on the licence itself.
For the record, I have always carried my licence while driving and cannot understand anyone objecting to doing the same. Anyone driving a potentially lethal ton or two of machinery can expect to be checked every day AFAIC, what's the big deal about a ten second glance at a card?
Now here's the funny part: the Residence card I've had up to now is a ten year renewable card very similar to the "DNI" carried by Spanish nationals (who are all fingerprinted at age 14 and make absolutely no fuss about it.) My card had one fingerprint as opposed to ten and I actually found it useful when paying for petrol or collecting a parcel or whatever. These cards are now being phased out after protests by groups of British expats in Spain and so I now use my photo driving licence for everything - except for the real pain-in-the-neck bureaucracy such as selling a house or attending court where only a Passport will now do. The Spanish Interior Ministry has now issued a "paper part" corresponding to the old Residence card, which is green, A4, undated and with no ID number or photo; is supposed to be kept (unfolded!!) with the passport, and is of absolutely no use whatever. Inspired by the DVLA perhaps?

I have hired cars a lot both UK and Europe using just the paper jobby. It's getting a bit dog-eared but it still works and I haven't bothered with the photocard one at all.

One slightly obscure use: if you use campsites in France (especially the excellent Municipal ones), you'll usually be asked for your Carte D'identite or an International Camping Carnet when you try to check-in. This seems to have become more common in the last couple of years. Your UK passport won't do, as it's proof of address they are after. The more jobsworth the manager, the more insistent they are. Happily, a UK photo licence will do nicely, as it does include your address.
