03 Replace one spring or two - safedriver
It happened to me this morning. Freezing cold, loud bang, broken spring.

My question is; is there any need to replace both springs? They are 7 years old, low (43 000 miles), but have been over speed bumps often enough.

Any help or opinions much appreciated.

General thinking, SFAIK, is that things like this (shockers, tyres etc) should be replaced in pairs.

I would disagree.

Do you always carry two people of the same weight in the front seats?

659.

Im tight so id just fit one spring but would replace shockers as a pair.

That is id be fitting myself and springs can be awkward were shocks are usually easier.

No, I don't. I can see what you're getting at. I also think that when negotiating speed cushions, the O/S spring gets more work. But if both springs were from the same batch, they may have similar defects.

Tks for the reply.

Mate had a puncture in his 407 and found the front spring had broken and sliced the tyre. Got recovered and replaced the one spring at a friends garage. When they checked the other side, it had also fractured. Car done 50k miles. His wifes Peugot has also lost its front springs at 30 k miles. Wondering what is wrong with Peugot steel these days..............I would always chage as a pair. The spring may have softened on the side you haven't changed and create handling issues etc. Also the mileage is the same for both fronts regardless of what you had bumped into over time.............

Depends on your finances. Springs are prone to cracking these days on all makes.

Thanks for all of the replies.

I opted to replace only one spring at this time, mainly for financial reasons. It was £156 due to having to take the bulkhead off to get at the top.

I will probably get the other one done on the next service.

We always always replace in pairs. New spring will be stronger and so car may sit a bit lopsided at the front. Also its our experience that when one goes the other is not far behind.

I have only ever replaced a spring once and only on one side. Never had any problems with it.
Provided the other side is ok, I dont think you need to replace both.

Sorry but you do. We have in the past replaced just the one side, and you can almost guarantee that 50% iof cases within a few months the customer will be back with the other side bust. I would rather just replace a shock on one side than a spring on one side. If its a front spring they can sometimse jump sideways and stab the tyre.
