Hi all
Just looking for some feedback from MX5 drivers / owners. I've decided that my rover is off to the Great Scrap Heap in the Sky. Was thinking of doing the scrappage scheme, but the maths just don't add up for me - after a weekend testdriving Mazda 2 / Suzuki Swift / Toyota Yaris, I decided that my money would actually be better off going on a used car.
So... in a bit of a departure from the supermini, I've decided that this is probably the last year till i'm 65 that i can have some motoring fun (am 31 now, gf is desperate to have kids etc), so am really looking at an MX5.
I've only heard praise said about them, but was wondering how noisy they are on the motorway? I'm guessing that they're not exactly as quiet as a tomb? Even if they are a bit roary, I bet is still puts a big grin on your face.
Any thoughts welcome - I won't need much convincing, as I'm 9/10 sold already.

we've got a 54 plate Mk2.5, which is pretty civilised on motorways with the top up. Tend to drive everywhere with the roof down though. They're pretty high geared so you're pulling 4,000 revs at around 80.
Great fun, you won't be disappointed.

The only times I find it bad is from surrounding traffic on some motorway / dual carriageway surfaces. Mine is used as a weekend fine weather toy with the roof down most of the time. ( '99 Mk2 1.8)
With Wilco on the fun bit.

Just tell her it's fine by you if she has a bigger car in due course and that you are even prepared to be a named driver on her policy for emergency purposes. She'll understand......

You will find yourself giving motorways the miss and choosing the much longer and slower winding back lanes for your journeys.
Very sadly, I decided to chuck mine in for scrappage - paid 2k for it 7 years ago and repairs minimal in that time and it's coming up to 20 years old. I'll miss it when it goes.

Thanks chaps - all sounds good.
I've been talking to a guy in the office, who has a jap import 1.6 - he says that he often ends up taking the A-roads instead of the motorways because of noise, and even the 1.6 is pretty punchy (if noisy). Since most of the mileage will be done on windy country roads to my office, i'm not too bothered. I might do the odd trip down to see the folks in france, but other than that i'll stay away from motorways.
Can i assume that January is as good as time as any to get a good price on a convertible? hope so! :)
And yes, SWMBO can happily stick with her Golf for now!

There's motorways and there's motorways ...
Driving any convertible on a motorway is tiring. Driving one on a concrete motorway is sheer torture and is to be avoided at all costs!

just to put this one to bed:
So in the end I've bought an '05 Mazda MX-5 1.8 Arctic, which is a huge amount of fun. Completely impractical according to my girlfriend, but she enjoys driving it too... I've just been out for a blast down the country lanes with the lid down and heated leather seats on, and am now so glad that we didn't get a scrappage-deal supermini!
Thanks for all the advice - as I thought, I didn't need much convincing - these things are a hoot!

They are the most fantastic handling cars aren't they? I had one last year, a 1.8 Sport. Sold it for various practical/family reasons but I miss the driving experience on a sunny day! Everyone should at least have a drive of one to experience the sublime steering and handling! MX5.com will have everything you need.

We went round Europe in ours last summer. MK 3 2.0 sport. We got a dog in November. The Mazda MX5 hasn't been out the garage so have decided to sell. 2007 Mk3 Sport 2.0 10000miles with leather and climate, silver, immaculate, soft top any ideas on value?

A friend recently offered me her '07 20k miles 2.0 Sport with folding hardtop, heated seats etc for £12k. Unfortunately for family reasons I was unable to buy it.
Hope this helps with your valuation.
