2000cc auto-worth it? - William James
Hello contributors

I wondered if anyone has any specialist knowledge to share.

I want to get a used Focus auto. Would the larger engine provide noticeably better acceleration than a 1.6 which I believe is sluggish? And would it be significantly more expensive to keep on the road?

For those of you who might be interested I have a 2004 Primera 1.8 auto. I can live with its sluggishness but it's not as reliable as previous models I have owned.

Many thanks.

William James.

I wouldn't recommend the Ford autobox that goes with this engine, I'm afraid. They have a poor reputation and are very expensive to repair or replace.

If you want a 2L Focus I would go for a manual one, that is, unless there are reasons that it has to be an automatic.

The Focus I and II 1.6 auto has no issues, one of the most reliable autos, it is not a ball of fire though the engine is sweet so revs freely. The Ford 2.0 auto combinations were less reilable in the Mondeo I/II though the Focus II 2.0 auto has the Mondeo III engine/gearbox so should be fine.

Have you considered the 2.0 tdci with the powershift box? Similar to VW's DSG and a nice steer. Can be had in an S40 too. Only thing is it's only out about a year or so and prices are relatively steep.

I owned a mrk 1 1600 Focus Zetec auto and it was fine.
I've also owned a Primera 2000 auto and that was fine.
I now own an 05 Almera 1.8SE auto which is a nice gearbox/engine match IMO
If you want something that accelerates con gusto - try a Porsche 911 :)

Thanks guys. Re the gusto: I'm more sine than con, to be honest.
