Had reason to visit a scrappie for the first time in 25 years today! I assumed the motors would be dismantled, parts cleaned and labelled and on the shelf, I was expecting a kind of Argos - only dirtier!
But no - nothing had changed! the boss man told me where the car was and off I went, had to borrow a spanner but got the part off & very cheap too.

Didn't see anyone wearing safety goggles, gloves, or hats and they were smoking as well!

I'll definately be back if I need anything - only next time I'll wear old shoes and bring me socket set.

PS didn't see or hear an Alsation either - but I guess he was probably asleep somewhere.

I used one of the new ones in Stockport. They do Ford parts but sadly some parts were so expensive it was the same price to buy them new from the main dealer.

My local scrap yard is cheap as chips too. Charged me £2 for 3 of Ford KA Aerials which keep getting nicked. Also I bought a gear stick knob and ash tray off a Focus Ghia 98 for £5 and sold the knob on ebay for £27 last week.

The ones round here, well, one will allow me on on Saturday morning but not during the week, and the other will not allow me on at all...

Not elf and safety as such, more the propensity of some such establishments to leak fluids and oil into the land and drains. Tends to make the Environment Agency and the people who try to give us clean water, rather cross. Which is right.

I had some contact with this place (although had never visited before today) when I phoned them to pick up and scrap my sons Ford Ka 2 months ago. Although "old skool" in their trading style they are properly licenced giving the appropriate "certificate of destruction" and the guy - the owner I now know - who picked up the Ka told me that all scrappers entering the yard are immediately drained of all fluids, etc as per the legislation.

The surprising thing for me today was that customers are still allowed to clamber all over the cars taking off their own bits.

you have to know your stuff before entering a tatters yard or you will get ripped by most of them
knowledge is king and let them know you know
i use about 6 different yards in three different towns and know who holds what
i very rarely buy off the shelf though as ebay would be cheaper in those circumstances
