Car is a mates K plate Fiesta 1.3.
The RHS indicator is fine.
The LHS clicks into place, and you can hear the relay going double time, but there is no indication on the dashboard and none of the lights work.
It's the relay has been replaced ? this made no difference. The same relay works hazards and indicators.
It's not the bulbs, all work when with the hazard warning.
When it first happened it was intermittent, then as it got worse it could be made to work by hitting the indicator hard. Now it's given up the ghost altogether! To me that would
kind of suggest that it's a problem in the column itself.
However if the relay can be heard working (the hazards work and they work of the same relay) how can the problem be ?upstream? of the relay?

Poor earth on the light assembly? You need to get to work with a multimeter to diagnose the problem.

Poor earth on the light assembly?
Would this not show up under the hazards as well?

The cable between the column switch and the relay is the only part that isn't shared with the hazards, so it's either the switch or the lead. My money's on the switch.

Thanks Doug!
The problem is she says she can *hear* the relay working when the indicator stalk is depresed.
I *reckon* this lets the cable *to* the relay off the hook. What do you reckon?

Just keeping it at the top.
Need an answer to this.

IF she can hear the relay going double time, that suggests there is a short from the relay to the lights..
Multimeter required or an inspection of wiring from relay.
|
|
If it was a short from the relay to the lights it wouldn't be affected by hitting the column switch, and the hazards wouldn't work. It sounds as though there is a short, or dirt, in the switch contacts and the relay isn't getting the voltage expected. The switch is the only moving part, and is used constantly, so it's the likeliest source of the problem.

Switch must be favourite, easy just to link its contacts with a spare piece of wire. I think you answered your own question with that statement about 'hitting the switch'. Good luck.

Thanks all!
Percy and doug:
Your logic is flawless. Problem is that surely if the relay is switching on and off at double time the switch *must* be working?
I do understand that the final analysis is for me and my multimeter. Just looking for good starting points!

Replaced the MFU unit.
Works fine now.
Hopefuly anyone else suffering from this seemingly illogical problem will be able to refer back to this.

Multi Function Unit. [1]
All the indicator stems are attached to it.
You can replace the lot form a scrappie for about 30 quid.
[1] I call it something else.

My thanks go out to Toad & friends ....
Your various responses confirmed my initial diagnosis ... should have had the courage of my own convictions, but I'm still a novice at this car fixing lark! ;-)
Anyway ... as my warty friend explained ... I purchased a secondhand MFU, replaced in the blink of an eye ... without breaking a nail I may add ... and Bob's your uncle!
