Hi all, my friend and I are wanting to get into karting at our local club (West of Scotland kart club). We are complete novices having only done indoor/outdoor arrive and drive before. We have both done a bit of research into karting but have been unable to attend a race meeting due to work commitments. Anyway, we found this package for sale on ebay and are considering putting in a bid:

I have already posted this message on karting forums but would greatly appreciate any thoughts from the wise old heads of the back room. What do you all think of the world of two-stroke karting? A few questions below that some of you may be able to answer....
1) It is unknown when the rotax engines were last rebuilt, is this a serious issue or should it help keep the price down?
2) What sort of questions should we be asking the seller?
3) Would the karts be suitable for other classes (FBlue), and can rotax engines be rebuilt fairly easily by ouselves.
4) Is this a good package for two beginners and what price is it reasonable to go up to (what's it worth)?
Thanks in advance.

I'm not an expert in this area, but I believe engines have to be built to a certain spec AND HAVE PROOF of it. There's questions about log books in the advert.
I'd suggest you wait and hang around those that do this already to pick up the information you need. I'm into (very) low level motor sport and find it's a friendly environment. I was at a trial today (I've dried out now thank-you) and picked up some very useful info about tyres and will be using it.

I must admit that I agree with BT... go along to the meetings and talk to those taking part, if they anything like the stock car mob you'll get the info you need... and also for rules and regs I'd be very surprised if there wasn't a website run by the Governing Body of the formula you are looking at where said rules and regs will be on show for you to read?!

Looks like a very good place to start.

b308's comment about rules and regulations reminded me the 'blue book' is now online:
