More problems afoot for my 406, i don't know whether this is immediate or could wait a while, but i'm pretty sure its quite commen and easy enough to fix.
When going over bumps at lower speeds you can a hear a creak towards the rear of the, also when applying the handbrake on a hill, and finally when stopping, just as you finally aren't moving any more a creak towards the rear of the car.
The creak on staurday when i was stopping did sound like it was coming from the whole of the car but it was wet and i had just started my trip so i think that one wasa one off.
Most importantly does this need fixing immediately cos i've got no money!

forgot to say, i'm thinking the over bumps creak and coming to a stop creak are different, they were slightly different.
Additionally the coming to a stop creak was more noticable on saturday when it was very wet and cold.

Andy,
I am not totally sure, but pretty sure that the 406 rear suspension arrangement is similar to the Citroen Xantia (without the hydraulics of course!). This means that you have trailing arms, and these rotate on bearings. Failure of the bearings is common on higher mileage Cits, leading to creaking noises at the rear, and inward leaning of rear wheels. Replacement on a Cit is about £150 / side at an independent. Not too difficult DIY, but you need a big spanner to get the nut off, and a good collection of drifts / presses to get the old bearings out and the new ones in. It needs attending to before it gets bad, as eventually you start top damage the arm, which then means the repair cost doubles.....
Of course, I may be talking totally out of turn, some Pug expert will no doubt confirm or deny my story in due course!

sounds a biut drastic to me, I was thinking rear drums and shocks but just a total guess!
Anyone have a better idea than me?

My neighbour had a similar problem with his 406 when it was still under warranty.Car spent loads of time at dealers, fault traced to insufficient/weak spot welds at area above rear screen, dealer rectified under warranty.I think that Peugoet may even by aware of problem.

i'm not liking the sound of this, by the way mine is a 98(S) old shape so was that the new shape?
I don't intend to get it fixed because its not that bad, thought i'd wait a while to get it fixed, but i was sure it was just going to be the shocks and drums, i read that they are common for renewal at this point ie 4-5 years old
