The carpet in the nearside rear footwell is sodden wet but confined to the area underneath the front passenger seat mostly towards the middle of the car under a sort of fan shaped plastic air vent.
I have noticed for some time now that the map wedged down between the passenger seat and centre console has shown signs of damp but it is now absolutely soaking so I suspect there may have been a problem for some time but it has just got much worse!
Since there has been little rain over the past months and I haven't hosed the car down or taken it through a car wash for absolutely ages, I am doubtful it is a straightforward rainwater leak.
However, there are no telltale smells to suggest the cause and the fact that it is only the one rear footwell affected must limit the options.
Any ideas please? Or am I faced with removing seat and carpets etc.?

It could be either a door seal and/or a floor grommet adrift.
If it is a seal, try applying something like talcum powder (less messy than grease or vaseline) to the seal then close the door. Any gaps in the contact points could indicate your answer.
Regarding a floor grommet, then you are in to either grovelling underneath and having a look or lifting carpets and possibly seats.
Good luck.

Plain water with no telltale smells could point to a problem with the evaporator drain system for the a/con.I would suggest that the drain tube for the a/c system is checked for blockages. This is usually on the n/side to centre of the car.hth

Confirm that. The a/c drain tube is exactly where your leak appears to come from. This is well known for getting knocked out of position or blocked up. Quite easy to get to and an easy fix too.

I am now trying to access the area as your suggestion seems like a very plausible explanation.
I have set about removing the passenger seat to get a decent look and have safely removed the plastic covers to get at the front fixing bolts. However, I cannot see how the little plastic covers for the bolts at the back end of the runners are removed. I have prised them upwards as much as I dare but am afraid I might break something if I apply more force.
What is the trick? Any other tips on this easy job to help an enthusiastic amateur?

Finally removed seat and lifted carpets - mopped up 3.5 pints of clear water from footwells - front and rear affected - the recessed bit going from front to rear was full to the brim.
Consensus is that air con drain is to blame - other suspects seem unlikely (no sunroof and no reason to suspect windscreen seal).
How do I check and unblock the drain? Is this the tube that goes through the bulkhead at the top right of the front passenger footwell? If so, it all looks fairly solid and there is no joint to break loose. So do I need to get the car up on a ramp and blow through from outside? Or can I access the other end of the tube inside the car relatively easily and blow it through from that end???
Just called steatership and they want "a minimum of £140" just to assess where the problem might be without even fixing it so I won't be going there!
Any further advice gratefully received.

Hi there,
I have just noticed (this morning) that water has collected in the rear passenger footwell behind the driver's seat. On first inspection the door seals, windows up etc. look to be in good order, as the car is only just over 2 years old.
However; on a more serious note, my audio system has started to play up with intermittant sound coming from all speakers, with only the main speaker in front of the satnav working most of the time, with the speaker in the rear passenger drivers side door crackling and banging as it tries to work.
Even with the recent heavy rainfall, my car hasn't leaked previously and I am a little concerned that the water does appear to be affecting the lectrics in my car somewhere along the line.
If anyone can help, I would be very appreciative.
Regards,
SQ

Could be something to do with the air conditioning. The aircon removes the moisture from the air and should then dump it on the road, but damaged tubes etc can dump it back in the car. Not sure how it would find its way into rear foot well. forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=121779

Problem resolved. Air con drain was the culprit. Thanks everyone for input and saving me a small fortune.
Drain tube fits to bulkhead like a grommet and had become detatched. Managed to refit after much agro. Now just faced with drying out... time for a beer!

Hi speedycar53
My Volvo V 70 - exact same problem. However I looked under dash on passenger side. Took off cover -not carpet - Found two drain pipes and both securely in place. Ran a/c for half an hour but the two drain tubes seem to be operating well. Hit brick wall now. Any advice? Am I lookingat thewrong thing? Please advise as dont want to pay outrageous Volvo s******ship prices.
