Motorway telephones - Doc
I noticed today on the M25 north of the Dartford crossing that the emergency phones are spaced at half mile intervals.
When did the change occur from the spacing of 1 mile?
I noticed this because I am trying to check the accuracy of my odometer which I think is reading fast.
How accurately are the phones spaced? What other method could I use to check the mileage reading?

IIRC the furlong posts were replaced with 100m posts many years ago.

The 'phones used to be every mile, but the current highway code says at approximately one mile intervals!

There are marker posts every 100 meters alongside motorways and location signs every 500 meters.

No problem, it was feet and inches when I went to school, no metric spelling either.

Doc,

The spacing changed a few years ago when Brussels realised that walking half a mile could not be good for you, so halved the distance. :)

This is the reason so many people are now overweight and unfit, they dont get the exercise when their vehicle breaks down.
