Mondeo front wing removal - antonios gubba
Does anyone know how to remove the front wing off a mark1 mondeo? It appears to be of the bolt on type but my Haynes manual does not give the procedure for doing this. Unfortunately I managed to scrape the gate reversing out of my drive and its dented quite badly...so I think the only option is to replace the whole wing...thanks :o)

Easy, simply remove the front wheel to gain access to the wheelarch liner, remove all the retaining screws and clips and take the liner out, then simply remove the front bumper, taking care to disconnect any plumbing for headlamp washers and wiring for foglamps, place carefully to one side ensuring you don't scratch the paint or twist the bumper at all. Then remove the headlamp/ indicator assembly on the side concerned, undo all the bolts along the top of the wing, the bolt in the hole where you have just removed the indicator, and the two bolts accessed through the clip-on plastic covers inside the car, in the footwell. Then scrape the underseal off the bottom of the wing where it meets the sill, and remove the bolt from down there as well. By cutting around the silicone sealant which runs all the way round the edge of the wing where it meets the rest of the car, you can then remove the dented panel.
Once you have obtained a replacement panel, rubbed it down, primed it, rubbed it down, painted it, rubbed it down, lacquered it, flatted and polished it, and applied a new bead of sealant to all the faces you cleaned the old sealant off of, you will be ready to fit the new panel in place of the old. Of course you will have to take great care to align it properly with the bonnet, door and bumper, while not scratching your new paint. Once you are certain it is correctly aligned, you can then bolt it all back together, refit the wheelarch liner, headlamp, indicator and front bumper, connect the foglights and headlamp washers and replace the wheel.
Alternatively, you could get a quote from a bodyshop.
Now you know why the Haynes manual doesn't give procedures for major body repair/ panel replacment...

OMG eeeeeeeeeek!! I was hoping it would just be a few bolts holding it on! lol anyway, thanks Dave for that very comprehensive answer! I might ring around a few places and see how much they'd charge to do it for me...although if its gonna cost a lot I will print out your answer and roll my sleeves up!
Many thanks!

It was supposed to be a little tongue in cheek! But it gives you some idea of how complicated they make these things now.
I worked in a bodyshop in 93/4, I was allowed to work on simple cars like Metros, Mk1 Astras and Sierras, but I was kept away from Mk3 Cavaliers, Mk1 Mondeos and the like for a long time because they were considered to need specialist, experienced attention, and because the build tolerances were so much tighter that a minor error would become glaringly obvious when it was all put back together.
A bodyshop should be able to repair it unless you've really done it well, you'll be surprised at just how much you can hide with a bit of filler!
