Hi - first post here. I have 99 BMW 5 (E39) which runs just fine but I need some help with the idle speed. It's fine when the choke is engaged but when warm it idles at about 500rpm which means it sometimes stalls at lights and makes driving in slow traffic a challenge! I anticipated there would be a simple screw adjustment to increase the minimum idle speed but can't find one. What would you advise to fix the problem?
Many thanks.

There isn't an idle screw, it could be your throttle position sensor is faulty, or your idle control valve. I think you're best getting someone to read the engine codes, to give a pointer to the problem.

Is that only possible at a BMW garage?

You can buy programs like Carsoft, but they take a bit of setting up, and then you need to interpret what the results are, it's not always clear cut.

As previously posted, the idle speed is automatically controlled by the engine management system.I would guess there is a local techie that can read the diagnostic system to establish what may be the problem. From your description of the fault I would think there is a problem with the camshaft sensor.hth

I'd also check for split hoses around the inlet manifold.
