Route from Surbiton to St Peters Hospital Chertsey - henry k
My daughter starts a year at the hospital next week and long day shifts usually start at 08:00.
It is easy to see several routes on a map and can recce them off peak but can anyone help with rush hour routes.
Although I only live a few miles away I have absolutely no idea of the traffic situation along the routes at peak times.

Options
1. Double back to Tolworth, A3, M25 J11 and just round the corner.
Looks the fastest route BUT all the risks of the M25 snarl up.

2. A3 to Cobham, Brooklands, Addlestone.

3 .A309, A307 to Esher, A244 to Hersham, A317 to M25 J11.
Risk of queue backing up for the M25?.

4.Same route as 3. but is Green Lane close to the Hospital a useful bypass of queues for the M25 junction ? It looks a possibilty on the map.

So help! IIRC this is Altea Ego manor but all help appreciated.

A general point henry k.

The M25 seems a lot quieter these days. Whereas a year or so ago I would have avoided the M25 like the plague during the rush hour, nowadays it can be quite sensible to use the Motorway.

I would have thought 40 minutes at that time of day would have sufficed.

Perhaps you will have to make a supreme effort one day - you can try it in your jimjams, I won't say anything if I see you.

Went by coach from Chelmsford(Essex) to Hampton Court and back this week-south round the M25-astonished how quick and free-flowing it was.

If the M25 and Cobham/Brooklands/Addlestone route prove to be congested then the A3 to Ripley is an option cutting back through either Old Woking/Six Cross Roads/Ottershaw or Pyrford/West Byfleet/Row Town/Ottershaw. The later requiring a 100 yd double back on the A3 past Wisley Gardens.

>So help! IIRC this is Altea Ego manor but all help appreciated

Indeed my territory, Mrs Ego is based at SPH.

From Surbiton, your route usually should be A3/M25-J10/M25-J11/St Peters way/Hospital.
Of late (past year) the M25 northbound all the way from J10 to J15 has been free flowing at 07:30 in the morning. I use it at least once a week (yesterday) and its fine.

In the event of a problem my alternate route would be

A3 to Ripley, off at Ripley turn, under the A3 and back towards London, taking immediate first left off A3 into Wisley Lane and past the RHS gardens at Wisley.
Past the Anchor pub and over the Wey navigation at Pyrford lock and turn right at T junction into Pyrford Road.
Turn right at at traffic lights, junction Pyford Road / A245 Woking road, then take an immediate left (20 yards or so) at the next lights into Camp hill road.
Under the railway bridge, over the basingstoke canal, across the roundabout on the B385 Woodham Lane through the parade of local shops at New Haw, take one way left fork.

Left at T junction (giveway) into St Marys Drive, and follow that into the valley, past the garden centre, up the hill past the Cricketers pub, and turn left at next giveway T junction into Hare Hill.

Left at next giveway, junction Hare Hill/B3121 Murray Road.

Third exit off the roundabout at the Otter pub, onto A320 northbound, and bingo you go past SPH.

It sounds complex, Its not and a much more easier and logical route than it looks on the map. 15 minutes from the A3.

DONT be tempted to come off the A3 at Cobham and use the A245 byfleet road - complete nightmare, and avoid Weybridge at all costs.

SPH is a big confusing rambling place, make sure you know what department she is going to, and staff parking is a nightmare,

Was at St Peters Tuesday, boss giving a talk to the nurses in the Eye Clinic, satnav took us off the M3 (coming from Southampton area) onto M25 then off at next Junction, SPH is very close to the M25, imagine M25 a good route as have been surprised how quiet M25 has been recently as apposed to the nightmare it was a few years back when I was on it regularly.
Try each route and make the decision after a weeks trial runs?

Thanks to all for their input especially AE

Interested to learn that the M25 traffic levels are now "reasonable"

I have plotted AE route on paper and looks good.

An option is for her to slip off the A3 at J10 and have a look at the traffic on the M25 and if gridlocked then up the ramp back on to the A3 and then U turn to Wisley.
However if the tailback south on the other carriageway of the A3 screws the RHS Wisley exit I guess it would be into Ripley and hang a right to rejoin AE route ?

I will forgo the pyjama run but may well try out things off peak. :-)
Daughter is very good at navigating inside females but not so good navigating in the outside world with us males.

I will leave her to tweek her TomTom for AE routing.

p.s for AE. Daughter is in the O & G dept for the next year. Awful hours but it is the 08:00 starts that appear to be the awkward ones for travel / parking.

Now I know why I have not been around for a while, you come up with a good idea and someone else gets all the credit ;-)

If you mean by Pyrford Church then quicker to go straight on into West Byfleet.

Nah there are road works and traffic lights at the junction of sheerwater lane and woodham road, and the turn right into the woking road is a real pain.

I have just re- read the earlier items and so can I add your name to the credits ?

I do not want to cheese off any Egos :-)

P.S. The A3 Hook underpass roadworks seem to be almost complete.

I hope to trial it today/tomorrow.
My daughter starts the route on Wed.

She has just finished night shifts so it has been purely work /sleep for the last week.
She finished, heavens knows what time after scheduled 0800 shift end and is now on a big high, having got the results this morning of her latest major exam. ( but still the practical to do /pass else do it all again )
I think it will be tomorrow before I hit the road.

I will report back.
Route from Surbiton to St Peters Hospital Chertsey - henry k
Wed afternoon was recce day so we tried all three routes in both directions from the A3.
1. A3 to M25 & off to the Hospital.
2. Back same route to the A3
3. RHS, Pyreford lock and AE route.
Very narrow and twisty to / from the lock and later some congestion due schools but that will not apply at transit time. All as described along the way.
4. Revesrse of 3 but went on to Ripley.
5.Started again at A3 to Ripley and up towards Pyreford.
What a really nasty turn off!

A great description except I would add "look out for a tiny rat hole in the bushes on the right"
Unsurprisingly we overshot it at the first attempt.

So all went well and I think the data has been captured.
Biggest delay 10 mins to do a short lap of that awful public car park at the Hospital.
We stopped at the Anchor for a bite. I passed the Badger and had a Cricket.
A lovely spot but i can only imagine the crowds at a weekend.
Staff said they 40 customers that they were not able to find a table for on Sunday.
I have never seen so many tables at a pub that I assume coaches do not visit but vast numbers of narrow boats might!

So a quick squint at Traffic England prior to departure and all she needs now is what is the best traffic report to listen to.

Thanks again to all.

I can think of better ways of spending an afternoon but needs must...

I haven't been to The Anchor for years but yes it does get busy at weekends.

Radio Jackie on 107.8fm broacasting from tolworth tower has great info for the start of your journey " queues on Tolworth Broadway..." but I'm not sure how accurate it will be for the second half.

I worry for her health due criminal hours she works.
Seven night shifts. Two days off to sleep and adjust. She never finishes on time but as it is the final day more paperwork so left 4/5 hours ( 18 hours at job) after shift end. OH and she is supposed to do umpteen hours of computer modules in her "spare time " prior to starting this morning.
Just six weeks left til next exam so several revision course of 2/3 days to pay for and arrange etc.
Please please do not believe all you read about hospital doctors hours.
She is committed to the NHS. IMO It is slave labour. Rant over !

I could spare the time and know from years of commuting that researching all alternative routes when not under time pressure pays big dividends in keeping one a little more relaxed and probably safer.

On Traffic England this morning M25 queues , 8 miles in 18 mins, slip road queues.

Text message came in " Going via Ripley due queues"
So our rehearsal has already paid off.

Will pass that on. Forwarned is useful but no viable alternative to sitting out that queue.

To date the M25 even in the rush hour has been the chosen route with no hold ups reported.
Maybe it is the state of the economy that has segnificantly reduced the M25 traffic flow ?

The motorway also reduces the risk of meeting a certain Mitsubishi Lancer driven by a well known (here) retired person. :-)

except

1/ He is still currently driving the black spy mobile and
2/ He sometimes uses that same route, because as you say its usually free flowing.

When I finally retire, it is my intention that the duvet will still be over my ears most mornings at 8am!

Glad the M25 is working for your daughter henry k.

I came round the M25 anti-clockwise between J15 and J10 this morning at about 07.30 and it was flowing freely. I wouldn't have done that a year or so back!

I made it from Junction of A1 to Junction 11 @ 08:15-09:00 today, with barely a stop, even through the roadworks. Even the speed restriction were not lit.
