hi
I have had a 2005 1.8 ghia x for the past 6 months. I too noticed the lack of acceleration. The car can do 70, 80 or more but does it at a very slow pace. I really noticed this when i took a 1.2 fiat for a test drive and it had more pep than the 1.8 mondeo.
I took it to our local garage for a computer check and they came back and said that it needed a new catalytical converter and as there are 2 on these cars and can only be ordered from Ford that will be £1200 including fittting . I have decided not to change this as these cars are only worth £3500 or so.
Hope that helps

sounds rubbish. The Cat on my 2005 2l is perfect and acceleration great. anyway , aftermarket cats are available for many cars, far cheaper than teh maker prices. Unless it has been physically damaged by accident, cats last years, i have another car that is 10 years old car ,with the original ,cat and that is fine.

Coil packs are a weak point on modern Fords. My mum has a StreetKa which had similar symptoms to your car (hesitation, "holding back", and surging slightly on light throttle). This developed into a serious misfire, and a new coil pack solved it. Unfortunately, the misfire had damaged the cat, and this needed changing as well. Since then it has been perfect.
The StreetKa cat came in at just under £1,000 including fitting at a Ford dealer. My dad haggled, and got them down to £800 as they'd done the original diagnostics and the coil packs the week before. The car has run perfectly ever since.
Incidentally there was a whole saga before this of having the coil packs changed for non-Ford items at a local indie. This caused even more trouble. Bite the bullet and fit genuine ones.
