New Golf - Detailing Protection - njsb
Getting a New Golf next Tues as part of Scrappage Scheme.

Have chosen Solid Black Paint as colour (I begrudge paying VW £400 for metallic paint that costs them a quid or two).

Is it best to buy detailing products (Polish/Waxes,etc), then clean and protect straight away, or will the factory coat protect the car for the first few months.

Car was built in Germany at end of July.

Does anyone have recommendations for a good wax for Solid Black paint that lasts a long time.

Also any recommendations for a good alloy wheel sealant to help protect the wheels?

Thanks for any suggestions.

I would suggest getting it Superguarded or suchlike - I was a sceptic but our Golf GTi was done (at around £150.00) and it was only washed by rainwater but was still shiny black and new looking. You can get it done outside the dealer networks by buying the stuff yourself and giving it some elbow grease. Honda had it from new and that has never been washed and looks good.

From new it will benefit from a very light polish and then some sort of acrylic sealant or wax to protect it. Less money than Superguard and if done twice a year offers much better protection and a higher shine. If you haven't got time or the inclination to do it yourself then Superguard and other similar products are made for you.

Sitting on my drive I have a 2000 A4 with solid black paint and a 2006 Passat with pearlescent black paint, and they both need a good clean, but when they are clean the A4 looks shinier than the Passat. In fact, the A4 looks almost new when washed and polished. I don't think I'll shell out for metallic/pearlescent paint again.

My advice would be to forget the treatments and just wash the car at least every 2 weeks and polish it with Mer or Autoglym every couple of months.

My wife's car is five years old now, she's had it from new. It has solid very dark navy paint. About the colour of blue/black fountain pen ink.

I'm pretty sure it has never been polished by me and I'm certain she hasn't done it but it's still shiny. It gets hand washed by me most ( well some ) weeks though with a pukka car shampoo.

Forgive my ignorance, but I thought all modern black cars were metallics??

Quink?

Sorry, just been visiting friends, and they'd a bottle of the stuff on a shelf. SWMBO and me could hardly believe it.

It's still readily available, so there must be enough people use it for it to still be economically viable to produce.

There is plenty of information out there about detailing of cars. Google for it, that is assuming you want to waste hours on this rather absurd pastime, or visit www.uk-mkivs.net where there is a forum on how to look after your VW, where people spend days, it seems, claying their cars, cleaning, polishing and waxing etc.
Me, I love a clean car. I just wash it regularly, at least once a week and give it a go over with Autoglym's Resin Polish a few times a year.
