I am about to change the backbox on my car. The tailpipe is a ball of rust due, I am told, to the sulpher content of petrol. Can anyone please advise some way I can treat the tailpipe of the new box, before fitting it, to prevent or at least delay, the formation of said rust ?
Thank you. Pete.

Get a stainless system.

I know these things..................

I hope you can get the backbox off alone!! Most cars have a sleeve fitting between the backbox and the centre section, and it invariably bonds itself together, making it necessary to replace the centre section at the same time.

A very good design feature if I don't say so myself!

I have repaired many exhausts and have come across few that have failed due to rusting from the inside out which is often said is the main reason for failure. The best carbon steel exhausts in my experience have been Bosal, the worst, Timax, but even the best exhausts no matter how well the components are aluminised eventually fail at the welded joints and exposed bends.
Of course the best exhausts are made of good quality stainless steel with a high nickel content.
If they were fitted as standard from new we would not have this problem but spare a thought for the exhaust manufacturing and service replacement industry and you have the main reason why this will never happen!.

What's the approximate difference in cost say for a stainless system on a Vx Omega to a standard one? anyone know? Mine's getting to the stage of repair and I am wondering if its worth replacing with a st.steel.

svp - I asked the same question of crombster the other day - the reply was "MMV Perfomance in Stirling for around £360. It's a twin pipe system that doesnt create a great deal of noise - near standard during normal driving with an added subtle throaty rumble during hard acceleration. Plus it comes with a life time guarantee which im quite happy with."

My local place (not a fast fit chain) said the exhaust on my MV6 is in 3 sections, each section is £94. So if I can get stainless for £360 then I will also be happy.

Can you get stainless systems for any popular vehicle model or just performance cars? Whenever I've looked on the web at sites advertising SS exhausts they only seem to list a small subset of cars.

I've owned a personally imported Pug 406 LX from new and intend to keep it for ever, so a SS system has great appeal to me. Can anyone suggest a place I can buy one (South Coast/West Country)?

Thanks

IIRC, the Vaux Astra from "R" reg onwards comes with a stainless steel exhaust as standard.

Have you got an electroplating firm in your area which could copper-plate it?
Rusty exhaust. - Pete
Thanks for your reply Brian. Will look into that.
Rgds, Pete.

A stainless steel exhaust on the Omega will be a good bit cheaper than the OEM one. Vauxhall do offer a cheaper after market alternative much like fast fit places. The top quality original cost at least £500 if I can remember correctly.

Doesn't copper give off noxious fumes when heated?
Rusty exhaust. - Crombster
Various Vauxhalls have chrome plated tail pipes, but I have never heard of one with a stainless exhaust system as standard, and surely not fitted to all Astras?

No more reason for copper to do that than any other metal.
Look at what plumbers do to copper tube. The only fumes there come from the jointing flux.

Read somewhere that Pumas have a stainless system ??

Some coppers positively stink !!

Tee hee, nice one.

Systems rot from inside out, so plating existing components is a non starter.
