Due to road changes, several sets of traffic lights and pedestrian crossings in my area have been renewed and each supplied with about 6 cameras. Some of these point down at the crossing, some up and down the road. What are they for?

Sounds like they are sensors to detect people crossing and cars approaching.
If these are the newer type of crossing it means if someone presses a button but then moves on the lights won't stop cars unnecessarily. Also the crossing keeps cars stationary whilst someone is crossing.
i think they are called Puffin Crossings (pedestrian user-friendly intelligent crossing).

I used to think they were cams, but as the other guy said, they are people sensors and traffic sensors - to help speed up traffic.
The big yellow ones are the spycams

Infrared sensors so that the crossing will ignore the stupid kids(and adults)who push the buttons as they walk past and the delay in changing the lights after pressing the button will be affected by the amount of traffic.

Isn't it an offence to obstruct traffic? Masny years ago a friend of mine was done for driving through a red light on a pedestrian crossing after an oik walked past and pressed the button. The police saw what had happened but weren't interested in stopping the pedestrian. Hmmm.
Not police bashing but obviously the motorist is an ATM and the pedestrian was probably on benefits smoking roll ups

APNR cameras are not really watching speeders or red light skippers though. I believe some are monitored by CCTV and so an offence may be recorded that way. Really all they do is warn a control room that a scally is driving past a junction with no insurance.
