03 1.6 Not unlocking on front passenger door. - argybargy

My son has recently purchased a Rover 25 1600 from a dealer who was worse than useless. Whilst viewing the car we found that the front passenger door wouldnt unlock with the remote, and the dealer promised to fix it before delivery. On delivery we found it wasnt fixed, and after more empty promises and eventually a total loss of confidence in the dealer doing anything but lying to us, it now seems we're left with no option but to sort it ourselves.
The central locking locks all doors and the boot, but on unlocking you have to pull the button up to unlock the front passenger door. I took the inner trim panel off the other day but cant see anything obviously wrong, though I havent actually studied the mechanism closely yet. When you operate the remote to unlock theres a slight noise from the mechanism but nothing happens, and I'm assuming that because it locks it must be mechanical rather than electrical. Anyone any ideas how to proceed from hereon in? Diagrams would be appreciated if anyone knows whats going wrong. :0)
Cheers.

I suggest you have a look at the front edge of the door where the rubber harness boot enters the door. Pull the boot back to see the harness itself and make sure none of the wires have backed out of the multi-block.

if the door is locking, then you dont have a wiring fault. The fault will be the solenoid device, which is quite a common problem.

Thanks to both for your suggestions.
Not being familiar with locking mechanisms, where do I find the solenoid for this door and is it simple to replace? Is it attached to the lock and what does it look like?

Should be screwed directly on to the back of the door lock. Bit of a fiddly job, though. Suggest if you have a digital camera, you take a few photos as you go along so you can look at where everything goes on re-assembly.

Most likely the door lock/unlock motor - a notoriously unreliable unit. Remove the door pad as well as the liner (plastic rain sheet) and then with the door shut and a decent torch you should be able to see if the motor is working properly. When these motors are on their last legs they become very noisy when compared to a correct operating one. Changing is simple by removing a few screws, one cable plug and unhook from the door latch.
I'm sure someone on this forum will be able to tell you where to purchase a replacement from......

Hope this helps

Thanks again Triumph, thanks Robin. Come the weekend I'll strip the door down again and see whether I can suss out the mechanism properly and decide how to proceed.
Would both door motor and solenoid be best replaced at the same time, even if only one of them is faulty, and could anyone point me in the direction of a suitable source for the parts?

Parts supply for Rovers remains fairly good, if you've got an X-Part service Centre near you(often ex-rover dealers) they'll be able to fix you up with a replacement motor, otherwise there are various places on internet. Rimmer Bros are fairly good and worth a call.
The central locking motors are such a common fault on Rover 25's you might even find that your local motor factor could supply you one.
You'll probably find some motors on ebay too.
