I plan to travel from Keswick to Sevenoaks on a Monday in July, during the hours of daylight. Obviously I could go down the A66, A1, M11, M25. Or possibly M6, M40, M25. And I suppose I probably will.
However, I fancy a relaxing drive, and don't like sitting in traffic jams and driving in urban areas and red lights. And the M25 is prone to being one big traffic jam.
So - is it possible to do this journey during the hours of daylight in such a way that I can get around London without encountering much traffic, or am I being unrealistic?

barring an accident or a hold up on the queens bridge plan a should work without problem i turn off at alconbury hill is that where you turn off

Either way holds possible snags.
Route 2...Section 'tween Preston and Knutsford, Birmingham area (the M6 toll would help at a cost), but once past those 2 the M25 'tween M40 and A21 should be quite good by the time you get there.
Route 1...Roadworks at Colsterworth not sure of any further up the A1, A14 Huntingdon to Cambridge (nasty section up to 9am), QE2 bridge can be a pita at anytime, again should be OK once past that.
As you have several weeks could you get a decent deal for the train instead?

Driving around the locality can, in fact, be pretty exhausting, with mostly narrow, twisting roads. Buses are good and the bus station is beside an excellent supermarket with a good cafe. One service takes you from the rail station in Penrith to this (or stops, at request, opposite the war memorial/Fitz Park). Just back from a fortnight there and only used the car twice, as last year at Windermere.

Thanks for all replies so far.
1. Yes, Alconbury Hill is where I was planning to turn off.
2. QE2 Bridge was one of my main concerns. I've encountered it before.
3. >>the M25 'tween M40 and A21 should be quite good by the time you get there.
What times does it tend to be OK?
4. The train is not an option.

M25 between M40 and A21 should be reasonable between 10am and 3pm, hopefully your time should be somewhere in that window...always excepting that an accident could cause chaos at any point.
I bet your next question will be where to get good food about 8 am on route down..;)

gb - that's helpful.

Alas, not a chance. I'm not just wanting a relaxed run down, I'm also wanting a relaxed start in the morning.
I know, I know. Some of us want our cake and to eat it too. :-)

Yes, they at least have that in their favour.

got to disagree with route option 2 he would be much better getting the ferry at newcastle to go to hamsterjam and missing out the tedious m62/A1 junction
|
Well, I took Route 1. Sailed through the roadworks at Colsterworth, and even the QE2 bridge was fine (I crossed it just before 5 p.m.)
Thanks all.
