Volkswagen Golf III (1992 - 1997) - 97 2.0 no tach/flashing oil light

97 2.0 no tach/flashing oil light - earling
It rained all day today and my GTI lost its tach on the way home, and the oil light started flashing at the same time.... (I have an oil gauge; the pressure's fine.) The tach reads for a second or two after start up, then quits.

I checked the ground to what used to be the oil sending unit (fine) and the three prong courtesy light door switch per another post about the same problem on a diesel model... nothing.
Anybody know this problem, or what the tach and oil light have in common?
I suspect water is the culprit somehow

isn't the oil flashing light the MIL light on the gti? Not 100% (though I should be as I also own one).

I don't know what the MIL light even is...
It's a picture of an oil can that flashes every two seconds. there's also a loud oil buzzer which is NOT coming on. (I recently replaced the sender with a mechanical oil pump and grounded the sender lead to the block because that annoying buzzer kept coming on)

In any case, the problem fixed itself... not confidence inspiring at all, but I'll take it!
