98 2.0 Iffy starter motor - TimOrridge
On the odd occasion over the last 3 months the starter has failed to turn the flywheel, however it has done it the last 2 out of 3 times I have used the car. It just spins and doesn't engage. Retrying one or twice does eventually make it catch but I may be at risk of burning out the motor. Is there any way you can lubricate the mechanism to allow allow the ring gear to slide back and forth or would it be a new starter motor?

Sounds as though the motor or solonoid is at fault. You could check the connections, especially the earth lead from the battery to the engine, but its more likely the starter itself.
