Shakey wheel 2 - Andy22
Well, i thinks i've made some progress.

Again when i'm over 60 a get a "shakey" or vibrating steering wheel, i did increase tyre pressures but it did,'t really make any difference. Interstingly i have new front discs and pads and 4 new tyres and all 4 wheels balanced.

Las night when first going on a dual carriageway for 5 mins their was hardly any vibrations but a little and noticable when the speed dropped below 60. Then as stated 5 mins into the journey it started to vibrate a lot more and didn't stop, i proceeded to go round a bend at 70 and from what i can tell it stopped until the car straightened up, then it started again.

Am i right in thinking this is the wheel bearings, if so how much are they, how quick to do (hourly labour).

Bear in mind this 406 is only 4 years old, but 120k.
Should they go that quickly

Help please.

I'm wondering if it could be a brake cylinder piston partially binding. Do all the wheels feel roughly the same temperature after a run? Or does one feel hotter than the others?

The life of wheel bearings differs considerably, and not only from one make of car to another. Lots of motorway miles should not wear them much at all; hard driving on bumpy and winding country roads is bound to put more strain on them.

Jut remembered, many years ago on snow I hit a kerb on full lock at v low speed in a Mk III Escort. No noticeable damage, but symptoms a little like you describe - shaking at 60 - 70, was fine above and below those speeds. Something was bent in the accident - don't recall what I'm afraid.

interesting, i've got a funny feeling my car has been in some sort of accident as the front bumper isn't flush with the side panel and some plastic covering surounding the windscreen wash tank is snapped off with a cable tie holding two bits together.

I never got sent the log book from where i bought the car just the service history, do you think i've got any comeback?

Again when i'm over 60 a get a "shakey"

When I'm over 60 and get a "shakey" I'm going to sit down and pour myself another drink

mmm...... ok

So basically cansomeone clarify this for me, if the vibrating steering wheel goes away when going round a bend, it is likely to be the wheel bearings?

How much are they?

Hi Andy,

It could be the wheel bearing (although if faulty they tend to heat up and weld themselves together - been there, done it, paid the price).

You mention the possiblity of an accident - maybe part of the wheel hub assembly is bent. Maybe even the bit that holds the bearing is out of shape...

I'd have thought a comprehensive laser alignment of all 4 wheels would show up any accident-afflicted damage.

AFAIK wheel bearings aren't hard to replace - approx. 30mins per wheel.

i've now heard that if wheel bearings have gone you should be able to hear them, in what positions of driving is this, ie coming to halt, going over bump?

Sounds very much like it could be worn shocks to me. My Rover was very similar - put 4 new shocks on last week, now it's smooth as you like.

Maybe one of the wheels is damaged. I would try putting the spare on and trying to see which wheel is causing the shaking. You say the wheels have been balanced but its not uncommon for damaged wheels to be OK on a Balancing machine.
It wont cost you anything either.

You could also check the wheel bearings as you try this.

Good Luck

Worn wishbone bushes?
Shakey wheel 2 - Andy22
The worn shocks thing is also interesting, cos when i'm brake lightly and just coming to a halt i hear a creak from the rear of the car wheels i think. also quite often over small bumps in the road.

Is that related to how fast you going because my steering wheel certainly doesn't shake under 60, and again when over 60 and going round a bend it pretty much stops.

Or could the creak be the wheel bearings, but when i read the haynes manual it said the wheel bearings should last the life of the car, and my miles are motorway miles.

Andy,
From memory, car wheel bearings are designed with a b10 life of 250000 motorway miles...b10 means that 90% of bearings will exceed this.
Could you jack up each wheel and rotate by hand? Any feel rougher than others?

Andy

The reason that your steering shakes at 60mph is because your front suspension's natural frequency is around this speed. Something is causing a vibration whatever speed you are doing but it just goes mental when it reaches it's natural frequency, a couple of mph either side and it will calm down. It doesn't solve your problem I know but it might trigger a thought somewhere!!
Shakey wheel 2 - Andy22
no its not the natural frequency cos it starts to shake at 60 and gets worse (vibrates more) the higher speed, ie. emm... 75

Finally then, i'm at work and the cars in a local garage today

One fianl thing i noticed over the weekend, it doesn't seem to come on till 70, and only once the car has been warmed up a bit.

Again when turning the wheel 1/8 round a corner at 70 it reduces the vibration quite a lot, but hard to say whether it stops or not.

Again i have got that "creak" towards the rear of the car at coming to a hault and going slowly over bumps in the road.

so any final thoughts, because knowing the garage they won't be able to find anything!

A peugeot? I have had 3 Peugeot cars, plus loads of Peugeot courtesy cars and 1 brand new last year. Even my brand new 106 had wheel shaking problems, being returned to the main dealer at least 4 times in the short time I had it. My older 106 diesel was never right, no matter how many times different garages balanced the wheels. Also my 1st Peugeot (a 405 GRi) also suffered from the same problems? Could this be a Peugeot related problem? I have a Laguna now, and there is no shake at all, at any speed. Strange?
