I have bought two cars at cargiant this year and on both occasions they have flatly refused to haggle. Screen price, that's it. No exceptions.

Your PX will make no difference whatsoever to the purchase price of your new car. And don't expect a good price from them for your PX, you'll get the bare minimum. If this really matters to you, sell privately if you can. They will say the same you you quite openly.

I quite like buying there, and have received good after sales service when I've had a problem - they paid full main dealer price to replace a faulty waterpump on a Mazda 6 I bought from them, just make sure you get your car checked out independently after buying it for any faults within 30 days of purchase and they should stump up.

Of course if you don't ask you don't get, but the normal stance of car supermarkets (AFAIK) is that the screen price is fixed. They operate by shifting plenty of metal as efficiently as they can; if you don't accept their screen price, someone else soon will.

My only experience is with Fords of Winsford - regarded as one of the best - and their prices are competitive and realistic, though their p/x is tight but not unreasonable. It's a pleasant enough experience.

I bought from The Car People and found it quite a good experience. They corrected cosmetic faults such as stone chips and Alloy wheel scuffs, serviced the car and matched a rival car supermarkets deal (by upping the PX offer) when asked and also threw in 6 months tax. So not bad really. No sales pressure really but enough attention when needed. Would buy there again. Tried the sell on paint + trim treatments a few times but took the hint when told.

Car giant have plenty of good cars, but what the hell is the 'administartion charge'? Are they taking the mick?

It was several years ago, but Fords of Winsford wouldn't haggle. Also, they gave a part-ex price which was very low, but was valid against any car. You have to weigh this up against the sometimes lower screen price of the cars the supermarkets sell. If you are paying cash, I think they can be a good deal, but less so if you want to part-ex.

main dealers have caught onto the 'admin charge', another tax for the motorist, just remember that the price quoted is plus that admin charge. About £80 , if I remember grrrr.

Bristol Street Motors used to have a £56 admin charge but scrapped it in the end.
I never could understand that I had to pay a charge for buying their product!
Madness.

Yes - to a degree. I was buying a VW Polo on behalf of my mother. I was happy with the car and the price then I was told of the admin fee. I refused to pay it (about £80 ish if I remember) and was prepared to walk away. Salesman said If I pay for the admin fee, they will put 6 months tax on it (which was also about £80).

Seemed fair to me and we bought the car.

Experience at the Car Shop was definetely not. After adding in the various admin charges and warranty fees price (for cash) was so close to franchise dealer that I preferred the security of the latter's approved used scheme.
