89 1.6 overheating question - lakedaimon
Hi guys, i have one question about overheating, i would really appreciate it if someone could answer.
Can an underlying head gasket problem be the CAUSE of overheating problems or the gasket problem is always ONLY the result of overheating?

Very unlikely unless the engine is very down on power so you are having to push it hard, its far more likely that the overheating has caused the failure.

Thanks Peter. The car IS low on power (20yo), and combine this with the extra effort it has to put with airconditioning system .... It must be a hell of an effort for the engine.
What puzzles me is that overheating occured while driving at about 70 miles per hour at highway and not so much in the middle of heavy traffic in town.
Peter may i ask what car u have?

if you think its a headgaskit keep an eye on your water does it use a fair bit ? is your oil creamy like mustard instead of a normal brown colour does it boot white smoke out, if not then just check the basics 1st thermostat, are the fans working? ect.
