Golf Plus v Golf - hethmar
I am in the process of buying a New Golf Plus V1 with all the SE trimmings.

I liked the fact that its roomier and higher than the usual Golf VI plus the pretty extras like Park Assist. However I notice that this weekend scrappage deals are giving £700 more off the plain Golf than the Plus.

Am I wasting the £700 - any views please on whether I should stick with just Golf rather than the Plus model?

Only since no-one else has answered am I offering my thoughts: What do you get with the Plus that really is a plus? Extras aside, it appears that headroom is the answer, but I wonder what use extra headroom is, if you don't need it. I think the Plus has slightly inferior resale value too.

Well it depends if you intend to keep it or trade it in at a later date !! the golf will hold on to its money better than a Golf plus but if its space for the grandchildren you need and the ease of getting in the car ! the Golf Plus is better.

Driving wise there will not be not much difference !!
No doubt you will get people saying there is no point in the Golf plus but like everything its a personal choice

You should really choose a different name as you use that on another site (smile)

A Golf Plus VI is a Golf Plus V with a minor facelift. A Golf VI is a Golf V with a bit more of a facelift, but many people think Golf VI is an all-new car (that clever VW marketing again) The Golf Plus hasn't really taken off and accordingly the Golf VI will probably hold its value better.

But you may put a high premium on headroom ...

Thanks guys. Difficult one - I like the ease that you can get in and out of the Golf Plus and the extra roominess inside (I believe 4 inches wider?) but I dont want to find it difficult to resell.

I guess all the extra cubby holes and the park assist attract me :) And the fact that the 2 dogs can fit in easier .............hmm, Im talking myself back into it now.

(Cuthbert, Ive nothing to be ashamed of :))

The Golf Plus is a nice car, if access is your priority then go for the Plus, the dogs are an important consideration as well. We went for a Focus Estate for the dogs as a double cage fits neatly inside. If you and the dogs are happy with the Golf Plus then the £700 is not as important a factor as choosing the right car for your needs.

many thanks :) Ive just been comparing the two specs and the Golf Plus rear seats slide forward, which I assumed the Golfs also would but it doesnt seem to be on the spec for it. And yes, we normally have the dogs on the rear seats with covers but they still make a pretty mess :( We thought the larger boot on the Plus (it has two heights aswell) and the fact we could slide the rear seats forward would be good for the dogs (and the car!). VW wants £206 for the Golf Plus dog guard but Ive already bought one a few months old on ebay for £35. (Id have to resell it if we went for the Golf :)).

I was also fascinated by the park assist where the car does a Herbie and parks itself in tight places (Im a hopeless parallel parker).

I guess you are correct, I shouldnt worry about a few hundred quid less resale when the idea is to choose what is most suitable for our circs. The knee is getting a bit dodgey too so the easier entry/exit will be a bonus for me. Have to say when we were looking in the showroom, there were three couples sniffing round the Plus to zilcho looking at the Golf. May be its an age thing. :)

Thanks guys for making me feel more assured about our choice :)

Myself I think from what you have said the Golf Plus is going to be more suited to your needs !!
In the Which magazine the Golf plus was picked out as a best buy!! and unless you sell on at 3 years old your difference in trade in value will not be that much .
Regarding the difference in price or the better deal VW may be offering now all you can do is get the best price you can at the time you buy your new car.

I am sure you will love your new car and find it very practical !!

Thank you so much, I do appreciate that. This will be our first new car ever and we are nearly due our bus passes, so its a bit special and worrying for us :) Dont want to make a mistake over something so big and something so expensive.

I was a bit concerned when I saw the Golf got 4 stars and Golf Plus 3 but that may have been the previous models.

Most grateful for everyones input :)

I agree with Cuthbert - you may not have anything to ashamed of... but you are giving too much away....
That is you in a mustard top isnt it?

... handy to carry 2xfolding bikes in the back...

You'd probably get two Bromptons in the back of a MINI.

I think you are wasting £700. Why do you need the extra height ?? Also, I dont know if it is just my imagination, but the Golf Plus's we had on our fleet didn't seem to be quite as well finished 'trim-wise' as the regular Golfs. Ie less padding soundproofing andf inferior cabin trim - unless it was just my imagination.

Agree with Roly. If you need the extra space, go for a Golf Estate - there is a lot of room inside despite moderate overall length. The Mark VI isn't out yet so there should be good deals on the still-current Mark V.

Always consider an Octavia alongside a Golf in case it suits you better.

Why do people keep going on about "extra headroom"? The whole point of the higher roof is that the seats are higher (by 7cm I think) this gives you "more" legroom as your legs dangle straighter/downwards rather than stretching out. Anyone that has driven a sprinter type van will know what I mean.
