Cameras or Cops? - pullgees
I suppose something like this topic has come up before, but I haven't read it as I only look in now and again, so moderator pull it if you want.

Okay basically which save more lives speed cameras or more cops on the road? There has been a reduction of police patrols due to the advent of cameras. We know the government and camera partnerships tell us that cameras have reduced the fatalities where the cameras are located, but that's very silly if more people are dying on the roads overall due less police because cameras have replaced them; well actually it's monstrous. So where is the truth on this?

For me it's cops on the road. Cameras pick up only one aspect of poor driving - inappropriate speed in the wrong place.

More traffic cops and ANPR.

Just to be pedantic they don't pick up inappropriate speed, only exceeding the posted limit.

But yes I agree.

Cops for me too, why are we letting machines take us over ?, modern life is becoming like a bad 1950's sci-fi movie,

........ not a bad film, but a bit far-fetched, it'll never happen .......................

Surely the answer is a sensible combination of both?!!!

cops with guns so they can shoot joyriders who put innocent lives at risk
Cameras or Cops? - Lud
so they can shoot joyriders

And people who look like joyriders or wanted criminals. And people who reach into their coats for their driving licences. And people who fail the attitude test really badly. And a whole host of other undesirable categories... quite right bb. It's high time the state's monopoly of force got reasserted in an emphatic manner.

More traffic cops. More speed cameras at known accident blackspots and roads with higher than normal accident rate. Only cameras permitted to be those that take pictures from in front and behind to prove identity of driver.
Purely "revenue raising" cameras to be relocated to accident blackspots.
Instant on-the-spot fines for serious speeding (50% over posted limit), using mobile at the wheel, in fact for any traffic offence carrying three points.
10% discount on insurance, MOT and road tax for drivers with long, unblemished driving history; points "given back" as well as deducted in accordance with experience, driving record, etc.
(Carrot to go with the stick - it's only fair, isn't it?)

10% discount for good drivers? - What do you think the no claims bonus is for? Points are also sort of given back in the sense that new drivers (first two years) get banned and are ordered to reset their test after getting six or more points.

cops with guns so they can shoot joyriders who put innocent lives at risk

Judge: Why did you shoot him 68 times Officer?

Officer: That's all the bullets we had Sir.

Cops please.

Both. I would like to see more camaras at traffic light to catch people who go through red lights.

I would be happy to see more speed cameras, but I think there should be a little more leeway for people who are just a little over the limit - like a fine and just one penalty point. Ihave had a clean licence since I passed my test in 1972, and I the idea of even getting a single penalty point would deter me from speeding past a camera!

Both and plenty of mobile cameras for round village schools and all the other places fixed cameras won't pay their way.

I would hazard a guess that a vast majority of biffs occur at traffic light controlled junctions. As I posted before more cops. No speed cameras but every set of lights in all directions to have cameras. Not only could it prevent collisions but give everyone the correct timing to ease tailbacks and gridlocking, especially on larger roundabouts.

What I want to know is, since the advent of cameras have more lives been lost due to less cops on the road? Put another way would the death toll be lower if it wasn't for cameras replacing cops?
Cameras or Cops? - Westpig
a great big chunk of the most serious accidents are caused by drink/drug driving and/or serial offenders who commit numerous offences inc traffic offences, inc speeding offences, often in stolen/unregistered cars

if you cut them out of the equation this country's serious accident/death rates would be wonderful

none of the above can be stopped by a camera

so to answer the question more 'old school bacon' please (as someone posted above)

More cops, more traffic light cameras, tighter MOT controls.
