My TDi is very noisy when idleing and under accelaration when compared to a friends similar car. The car has done 105k with full service history. Any ideas?

I had a noisy one: the crankshaft pulley driving the cam belt was worn out.. Metal filings all round the case..

VW diesel noisy? Even stranger, that.

Slightly more helpfully.....They do vary: my last Golf V 2.0 TDI was quite noisy and far more so than a friend's 51-reg Mark IV 1.9 TDI which has 120,000 miles on the clock.

Not siure why they vary, but one of our experts hopefully will see this and throw some light on it.

The new CR diesels are much quieter, although Renault and BMW still have them beaten.

My tip: make sure the lube oil is topped up.

Having owned diesel Pugs, Audis and BMWs in last 20 years I occasionally notice more noise, and usually found the oil to be at (or getting near to) low mark on the stick.

Bit like comparing the 'clang' sound when hitting a half empty oil drum then the 'thunk' of a full one. Well that's my theory anyway....

similar car

When you say similar car do you mean another VAG group car with a 1.9 diesel PDi or another diesel that probably has common rail? The VAG 1.9 PDI is not the most refined but does have good mpg.

Our old TDi 90 Golf cannot rightfully be described as anything less than agricultural. Or worse! Only ever needed a wheel bearing in 9 years and gives a constant 50 mpg. But I agree that oil level affects noise. I wouldn't have mentioned it for fear of being thought mad, but I've found it too.

My wife's car is a 2.5 V6 TDI A4 cabrio and topping oil does make a difference. Not quite the John Deere ambience of the 4 cyl TDIs but, er, 'rough' compared to BMW 4s never mind their silky 6s (me proud owner of the latter)

But despite the noise I fully agree the TDI is a real beaut to drive. At least Audi know a bit about interior cabin insulation! At 85000 miles MPG is still excellent, and nothing major ever needed except that bleedin cambelt change.

Just to add. My friends car was also A4 1.9TDi with the same mileage.
His engine was considerably quieter, so what would make two similar 1.9TDi engines so different?

Quieter where? In the cabin, or listening to the engine at the front; bonnet open or closed?

All three.

My ole Brother has got this thing - I won't call it a car but it's an L reg 2 ltr diesel Corolla
... Now, I've owned and driven (in 'The Trade') many vehicles of every shape & discription but - I've never come across a 'thing' like his Toyota diesel ... no kidding, its soooooooooooo bad I'd rather walk!
I reckon the reason is that he bought it from a cut n' shut merchant (another relative!) and the absolutely incredible noise and vibration is down to the engine mountings in some way, in fact I'd put £££ on it.
