Looking at new tyres for my car (225/50 17"). Currently have three mixed worn tyres, Pirelli P6000 and Michelin Pilot Primacy HP, and a relatively new Pirelli P7 with a couple of thousand miles on it.
I can get 3 more P7s for £128 each from mytyres (£14 for fitting, each).
Or other tyres Goodyear Excellence £81, Toyo Proxes T1 R £100, Goodyear Eagle NCT 5 £101, Dunlop SP Sport 01 £108, Michelin Pilot Primacy HP £125. £16 for fitting, each from tyrexpress.
Has anyone got any recommendations? First priority is a smooth ride.

>Currently have three mixed worn tyres...
Start by getting a fourth tyre - just about any kind will do. I'd expect that to make an appreciable difference to ride and handling.

Now, assuming the S80 has similar tyre preferences to my S60, pay the extra and give it Primacy HPs. My car came with P6000s but the leasing company replaced the originals with Michelins. Once I was responsible for buying my own tyres, I bought Pirellis again because they were cheaper, but wished I hadn't because the car would squirm and tramline something awful, especially on motorway tarmac rutted by HGVs.
It's now back on four HPs and is an altogether nicer way to travel. They're wearing well too, and I back them to outlast the P6000s by some margin, so you can set that against the extra cost.

I use Khumo Ecsta on my S80 with the same wheel size.
Ride quality and noise levels are excellent, fuel economy is fine and wear is OK.
The fronts seem to last about 20k miles, backs about 40k, given the wear so far. That seems OK for such a big car that's driven with "spirit"!
You can get all four for about £400 fitting included.

I was about to recommend Event Mobile (if they cover your area), but their prices aren't as good as those you already have. What was interesting was the difference in price between 225/50 17 and 225/45 17:
Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3 £160 and £105
Michelin Pilot Primacy XL £195 and £131
Toyo T1-R £132 and £102
Looks like Volvo have managed to pick one of the more obscure sizes.

Pilot Primacy HP's - no question. Had these after P6000's on my S60 and I got nearly three times the mileage out of them and a much smoother and quieter ride. 3 mpg+ better fuel consumption too. Seriously impressive.

I've got P6000's on the S60 and no complaints with them, but I will look at the Michelins when it's time to change.
My S60 is the poverty spec "S" so makes do with 16" rims. Tyre size is 205/55 R16

Always best to have more rubber than wheel unless of course you are an F1 driver which none of us are.

If your first priority is a smooth ride, go for the Good year excellence. Good all rounder and very quiet. Also very good value

Yes I had been wondering about the Excellences, very tempting price. The Pilot Primacy (not Pilot Primacy HP) usually go for about £200 a corner, so I'm wondering how Goodyear can produce a tyre for less than half the price - and comparable with the 'Good ride' and similar Chinese knock-offs.
What's the difference between an £80 Goodyear and a £200 Michelin?
|
Difficult to beat these for prices, but note they do charge a small amount for del, so count that in.tinyurl.com/ob9oo4
For grip, i'll recommend the Toyo T1R's, wet grip is remarkable and no tramlining...but they are not quiet (MB 320 E class RWD)
On another forum a mechanic swears by Federal 595's, and they're very reasonably priced under £60 in your size.
Maybe worth a browse on Tyretest.com for user opinions before you spend the hard earned on anything?

Looks like I need four new tyres now.
Just been at a party, I had a few beers, wife had none. I say 'you're driving home' (about 2 miles). She moaned about her shoes. Car was parallel parked behind a small wall (about 1 foot high) off-street, she reversed it back to do the requisite three point turn to turn it around, but then for some reason went forward again over the corner of the wall.
The only new tyre on the car now has a hole in in the side wall just below the 'P' in Pirelli which is loudly hissing and letting out air.
She then told me to drive home.

And your reply??????????

£200 apiece for Primacy HPs? Mine are a couple of sizes smaller - same as DP's 205x16s - but I paid my local independent £188 for two HPs a year ago.

I guess that just goes to show how bigger and lower profile tyres can add a large amount to the running cost of the car.
Though the 225/50/17" generally have a higher load index and faster speed as well, so I guess they are more expensive to make.
Actually it's quite confusing trying to find out about all these different tyres. Michelin only list five tyres on their website:
www.michelin.co.uk/michelinuk/en/auto-utilitaires/...l
but they have more, they even compare the Primacy HP against the Pilot Primacy and say the Primacy HP is better (so why are they still selling Pilot Primacy?)

Hi Flunky,
If you have a quick search on the make and model section further up this page, under Volvo and then S60 on the drop down boxes you will see there was a lot of discussion on precisely this subject a while ago.
Primacy HP is the current version and what nearly everyone has in stock. Try www.etyres.co.uk for competitive pricing. They worked out far cheaper in the long run on my car due to the much better wear I got out of them. After 25,000 miles I still had 4mm of tread. On P6000's I would have to change the fronts after 10,000 - 12,000 miles.
Also they were much quieter. HJ himself had recommended them in his newspaper column a while ago which is what convinced me to try them. I had previously tried the Goodyear's but they were worn out in a very short time.
Good luck!

Thanks, just tried that, didn't come up with any thing, a google search for site:honestjohn.co.uk s60 tyres is much more effective though...
I don't do that many miles (5000 or so a year), and £100 for the Goodyear rather than £200 for the new Michelins (£135 for the old ones) seems like a no-brainer to me.
And at 6 years old, it's possible I'll not buy any more tyres. From what I've read the Excellences should be at least as quiet as the Michelins
